****The Official Samsung Galaxy S II Thread***

Got my old S2 back from my nephew as he's got his upgrade. Still running strong after nearly 3 years.

Mazuma is offering £45, however I have just slapped on a 4.4.2 AOSP KK ROM and it's running so well that it's staying with me.

Here's the ROM link - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2603169

AOSP KK + Some extra tweaks and settings + lower DPI to boot. The difference between the stock Sammy ROM and this is mind blowing in terms of aesthetics, the TW ROM is utterly FUGLY!

Oh no :( Came in here to update my mums S2, only to find 4.1.2 is the latest!
Didn't know this had been dropped by samsung already.

Is the AOSP NeatRom posted aboe a popular choice to go with?
Or dare I say a newer Touchwiz style ROM? Thinking the camera and SMS app being familiar would be good for my mum (but the stock Samsung Camera + SMS app can be installed over the top of custom roms as individual apps can't they?)

So I realised my sister's SII is still on 4.0.3 ICS, and it can't seem to find any updates, even via Kies. Was planning to manually update it with Odin but I can't seem to find an unbranded UK ROM, only O2. Also, I don't remember sammobile requiring you to have an account to download...

Slimkat 4.4.2 and Philz recovery and that s2 will be super slick!

Upgraded my wife's s2 the same way for the same reasons and she loves it! Such a huge leap in style and performance.

Only thing I had to do was increase the DPI as slimkat is defaulted to 182dpi upped it to 220 and the wife was happy.

I was tempted to go custom but I don't think my sister will like losing all her data and setting it back up :p.

And there does some to be a couple of bugs still present on Slimkat, I may flash it once she starts complaining about her phone. Should also give the ROM more time to mature as well. Guess I'll leave it on ICS for now.

Bugs like what? Slimkat is very polished. Only the occasional problem with the camera nothing more than you got with ICS from Samsung, touchwiz is one of the worst thing about Samsung ROMs!

Losing what data? :p

This is Samsung here - bootloader already unlocked and root access is easy peasy...no wipe required.

Install custom recovery - titanium backup all apps and data...then new ROM time

Not recommended unless you want to have problems! You should never port apps and settings between ROMs its asking for trouble. Full wipe/factory reset, wipe cache and dalvik then flash ROM and gapps packages.

If you don't now how to back up your text messages, contacts and pictures to a computer/sdcard then just ask! All can be restored. Its only the setting that need to be wiped when ROM hopping as they can cause conflicts.

I'm talking about 3rd parts apps like launchers, sms, dialer, browsers, dropbox quickpic etc etc.

Absolutely no issues with these when switching between AOSP and TW ROMS.

System apps are they ones you don't want to be messing with when hopping between AOSP/TW ROMS.

She was using some stock Samsung apps and the stock homescreen, so setting those up on alternatives would've taken a while. Other stuff can easily be restored.

Managed to convince her anyway, and got Slimkat running. Feels like a brand new phone now, she's just trying to get use to the Nexus style Android now after using Touchwiz for so long. I'm amazed how smooth it feels on the other hand, shows the S2 is still a very capable device even in today's standards.

How do you install it?

cheers

Have you never installed a custom ROM?

You need to root, install custom recovery (both steps done in one go on this phone iirc).

Then download a ROM (zip form). Then flash it via the custom recovery.

Watch some YouTube videos before hand.

I used a program last time to update to 4.1.2 but cant remember how I did it:o

Flash custom recovery via Odin then flash the zip file via the new recovery. Don't forget to flash the Google apps package or you will not have a play store or any Google apps!

Plenty of tutorials on the net even more over on XDA its very easy.
