That's the issue I was on about with the screen. It's not visible unless in direct sunlight but for over £600 I expect it to be perfect.

Yeah, hoping it will be better in 5.1/5.1.1. If not I'm selling up as this is unacceptable for a £600 phone. You can keep more apps in memory on an iPhone 6, which has 1GB of RAM!

I've owned more high end android phones than I'd like to admit, and I'm seriously losing patience with this kinda thing. We are now on v5 of the OS and it's still nowhere near as stable as ios or windows. Nowhere near.

Just look at the review over at phonescentral (think that was the one), after a weeks worth of reviewing he had countless forced closed apps and lags. This should not happen on a £600 phone running the 5th iteration of the android OS

hangouts is STILL a laggy and fragmented mess

knowing me, i'll still end up staying with the platform though  don't think I could live without Google Now

What I don't understand is that a PC with 3GB of RAM would be reasonably capable. It would certainly be capable of running a few browser tabs, a music player, a mail client and a messaging client simultaneously without paging. This phone just seems ridiculously inefficient.

Anybody got a guide of how to setup NFC "Tap and Pay", it just says "No installed payment services apps"?

I picked up a S6 Edge (64G) today and it's a bit of a culture shock coming from using IOS for the last 6 years!!

Tried unsuccessfully to obtain a 64GB version this afternoon.
My local Three store wouldn't sell me one unless I was buying on the contract when I actually wanted to upgrade my current contract to sim only as it worked better for my minutes usage and buy the phone sim-only.
Carphone Warehouse told me they had the phone then when I tried to buy they didn't have stock afterall.

Pretty much all of Google's apps are a laggy mess except Chrome. I was comparing stuff like Drive, G+ etc on my sisters i6 and the scrolling was smooth as butter yet on my N7/Z3/Z3C they lag like no tomorrow. Play lags too when scrolling! Android isn't a bad OS, KK is smooth, its the apps that are miles behind.

Blame poor coding of BloatWiz and LP for the issues. LP 5.0.2 issues don't happen after a reboot, usually take a week for Android to start increasing its RAM usage over 1GB.

Funny you should say that. Chrome is the main app most people are complaining about including myself. There is a javascript problem and causes the scrolling to be slightly juddery/laggy.

Turning off javascript fixes it... but of course you lose javascript. The problem is caused by ads, so if you are rooted using adaway also fixes this problem.

Chrome lags on any vaguely complex page. It's not just an Android problem - it happens on the iPad despite Safari being as smooth as butter.

Shouldn't happen on anything with a multi-core processor, as it should be executing JavaScript on a different thread to the UI. I can only assume it's badly coded - shocking from Google really.

OK these are my thoughts as a long term IOS and iPhone user.

1) Hardware is very good, thin, good camera, fingerprint scanner etc etc. My motivation for buying the S6 Edge over the iPhone 6 was that I wanted a new phone and didn't want to wait until September for the Apple refresh.

2) Operating system, hmmmm not so good, coming from Apple ecosystem where integration is very tight this just feel a little "cobbled together". This phone obviously has huge amounts of "grunt" but I'm not sure this really "comes across" in general use. Don't get me wrong everything seems pretty smooth but I'm not "wowed"! I have been using a iPhone 3GS for the last 5 years so I expected to be absolutely blown away but I'm not. I do have to say the screen is absolutely wonderful though, super crisp and completely readable even when outside in bright sunshine!

Now I'm willing to give it some time to see how I get on but it's certainly not the experience I thought it would be. I'll see how a do over the next week but I feel I might be returning it for an iPhone 6.

The S6 is good on paper, but the whole thing feels like a bit of a pastiche in terms of design - both hardware and software.

At the moment I agree.

This should not happen on a £600 phone running the 5th iteration of the android OS

This makes me feel that my initial feeling might be right but I'll give it some time!

Two annoyances at the moment is I can't see any way to setup NFC payments, it might be that this hasn't been launched in the UK yet but I can't find a definitive statement to that effect or when it will be launched.

As per my post above how an earth can it be that the Google Calender icon only shows 31st!! (hopefully I'm just missing something!)

When can we expect Android 5.1 on S6?

I dont rate chrome as a browser on devices, always used opera as I like text reflow.

I use Chrome because it syncs all my bookmarks, history & passwords across all my devices, which I find extremely useful.

Other useful apps:

Control the backlight of the capacitive buttons

Current layout of the hardkeys are the wrong way around, this lets you define the functions of the button, plus you can add long press back to kill an app.

As far as I know no NFC payments have been enabled in the UK outside of some operator branded ones (Vodafone and EE both require their apps to work as far as I know).

The app icon for Google Calendar is a static icon, there are some 3rd party launchers that support dynamic icons - but for a new Android user that might be a bit too far until you've decided if you want Android or not. I can see the appeal of iOS as it's all packaged together in a nice little box, whereas Android allows more customisation to get it how you want it - but that approach isn't for everyone.

Are you sure about that? Without paging? Windows in its default setup will always page some parts of an application out. This is true even on my 16GB desktop after a fresh reboot. It makes a lot of sense since windows pages what it thinks you don't need in ram at all so it can use more for its file cache/etc. Its certainly no issue, but to say windows would do all that without paging is simply incorrect. You could disable paging of course, but you can do a lot on android once you move away from stock too. That said, my note 4 stock can keep browser/Spotify/gmail/messaging all in ram no problem?
