**** The Official Samsung Galaxy S8/S8+ Thread ****

Hi all, ordered my S8 today. My last Samsung was an S4, been a Nexus (6 and 6p) user since then. Got a half decent upgrade deal with Three who I've been with for a while on a sim-only contract, no upfront cost and £37 a month for AYCE texts and minutes plus 30GB data.

Phone should be here Tuesday :)

Did you check how much they wanted for the Plus?

I've been looking at deals regarding the S8 and S8+, and from what I can tell the plus is not worth it. Coming from an iPhone 6S+, I do want a good sized screen but the S8 delivers that and should be easier to handle.

The deal I'm currently looking at is an S8 on EE, Unlim Mins/Txts, 15GB data on the 4GEE Max tariff for £37.99 for 24m, no upfront cost from mobilephonesdirect.

Good deal but redemption offer, unless I missed something?

Has anyone with an S8 from Vodafone actually have Wi-Fi calling yet?

Its now listed in their compatible handset list but nothing on my phone.
Do you have coverage already? It's enabled on my tester but it's a method of last resort, your device will use 2/3g for calls over it because Wi-Fi calling is truly awful for latency / quality no matter the design.

it doesn't show as a lockable option on my phone setting a. It's not there at all.

My tester isn't running a VFUK firmware, sorry my bad. It might be silently enabled (you can test with airplane mode activated then enabling wifi, wait 1 min, see if it turns on itself) but otherwise you might need to wait for a newer release sorry :(.

You can text calling to 97888 to make sure it's enabled on your account for what it's worth.

The memory management on my S8+ is starting to do my head in, exiting games to respond to emails or texts always results in reloading for me, even chrome pages are reloading when checking webmail, a few times now I've lost what I was writing.

It's pathetic, had this issue back on the Galaxy S6, very disappointing to see it still happening.

I had a good deal on the phone so I might sell it soon and put the money towards something else, the software is still rubbish.

I'm not a huge fan of the software either so far. Got mine yesterday and it's jerky, choppy interface leaves much to be desired considering the phone has nothing on it.

Also, am I missing something or does it not come with applications to play music or video? and how do you access download folder without having to go into MyFiles?

Has anyone used Package Disabler Pro on their S8? wondering if that will get rid of much of the bloatware services running in the background which may be responsible for the jerkiness. Doing a factory reset didn't seem to make any difference

Package disabler works fine, Play Music is the default music player which is good in a way, slightly less bloat so long as you like mind using Play Music. :-)

I totally understand where your coming from. I experience the same thing on my S8+. 4gb ram just isn't good enough for Samsung's UI. However, my Note 8 is a different story. The 6gb ram holds pretty much all my apps in memory.

Ah I deleted Play Music straight away, force of habit. Videos don't seem to have anything to play on either other than Google Photos.

And how the hell do you use DLNA on this? Sony's implementation of Android is light years beyond Samsung tbh.

Want to access files on your NAS? Go into File Commander and there it is sitting in Network connections.
Want to access music on your NAS? Go into Sony Music, Click Network and there it is ready to access
Want to access videos on your NAS? Go into Sony Videos, Click Network and there it is ready to access
Want to stream any of the above? Either do Screen Mirroring or click the little stream button in any of the apps.

hours going through the S8 and I still can't figure out how to pull files off network locations or stream to connected devices. I think this thing is going back, nice piece of kit but the software is trash imho

False advertising imo, 635MB is reserved by the system so unusable and it's impossible to use that last 600MB even though it's "available", not sure if that's the reserved memory it's fighting to keep free or an additional 600MB,.

The S8 is effectively has 2.8GB of RAM.

Pulling files off a network? I just use ES File Explorer for that. Screen mirroring works through the new Google Home app, I think that's what it's called, not sure if I recall a built in option for that.

Samsung video player might need to be downloaded from their store, I can't remember, I use MX Player Pro.

Samsung have an app on their store called smartview which works well for casting video, music and images.

It's funny, they're the most bloated phones on the market yet we still have to install more apps just to get basic functionality. :D

Anyone else finding their S8 lagging after a few months of use.

I have always been a Samsung Galaxy fan. Jumping from S2 to S4 to S6 then finally to the S8+.

I could held out another year with the S6 as it was fine performance wise but might have been showing it's age slightly. I thought the performance jump would be massive to the S8+ but I wasn't that amazed if I'm honest.

Now that I have owned the phone since launch so roughly 5 months it really has started lagging and slowing down. Anyone else notice this? I don't really have that many apps installed. All my photos are saved onto my SD card. Regularly use ccleaner and close background apps. Any tips guys?
