The 'Official' Screenshot & Tips thread 4 FSX enthusiasts & flight simmers.

Has anyone been lucky enough to run FSX on a Sandy Bridge system yet, specifically when overclocked? I am ready for an upgrade but was wondering whether I should push the boat even further out? The system I will eventually buy will be for FSX only, and I am aspiring to get close to the quality of some of the pictures we can all enjoy above. Any thoughts please.

FSX is very much CPU speed dependent. The faster the better so I'd expect SB to make a great basis of an FSX system. FSX only uses proper cores so will not use the Hyperthreading ones. I have no idea if the extra money spent on a SB with HT would make a difference to FSX performance in reality.

My 2500K shipped this morning so I'll post up when I get it up and running :D Coming from an E8400 @4.25GHz so will try to give some comparison

Hey folks,

Here are my latest screen shots AND 2 new videos, this time showing a bit of MD-11 action with some excellent HD liveries by good ol' McPhat. Along side these shots I also made 2 new FSX videos this week based on the same HD MD-11 so now you can see how I get my screen shots with some wonderful moving images in full 1080p glory (mind you, alas youtube does compress the video files a great deal, so there is some lost of quality and a bit of 'grain'). So if you fancy seeing the videos check below or view the full 1080p version at youtube.

As for the screen shots from some of those videos, enjoy these right here, resized from 2560x1600 but unedited:
(NOTE: on a few of the shots I left on the fps counter from fraps, so you can see how fast it runs on the PC at 2560x1600)

Great videos/shots as always Soya, good to see you're putting your new rig to good use. I have my new 2500k arriving tomorrow morning so I'm hoping to have a quick blast before work at 3 (should've got the day off).

Thanks and good luck with your new system. btw be patient and make sure you properly set up your PC & FSX to make it run as well as it can. I recommend following Nick's guides on both FSX install and windows 7 setup.

just though id post this up here as I havnt seen it mentioned

bojote has release a new shader 3 mod for ati cards running FSX. TEsted my self on a 5850 and can report much better perf (5-10fps watching the in game fps counter). Can run with much better image quality (AA specifically)

its in his forum sig here http://forum.avsim.net/topic/283061-bojotes-fsxcfg-file/page__st__125

Is this a new release of the shader model fix? If not then this was mentioned months ago.

Soya those shots are ace! I love the water reflections and the birds.

Hi ringo,

yeh it is, but this release was only put out in Novemeber 2010 and I couldnt see any info about it earlier in this thread. There was earlier versions which I had tried, but this release is stated as a 'final' version and to me seems to have better performance. This version comes with its own installer where as the previous version I tries was manual install.

i've just sold off my ati 5970 card in anticipation for the new 6990 or nvidia 595. at the moment i'm using my old 7900 gto which is a 512 card compared to the 2gb 5970. my cpu is the i7 930 oc'd to 4.4 ghz and 6gb ddr3 memory. the strange things is that the game runs smoother with the older less powerful nvidia card, no judder whatsoever at ultra high settings whereas there was occassional judder with the 5970.

i know people have mentioned that fsx prefers nvidia cards and is more cpu dependant i didn't think an old card would out-perform the amd flagship. the old 7900 card however gets trashed when playing other demanding games and judders along at high settings.

WIll need to reinstall this and check out some of the mods and addons.

No matter what I try though I can never seem to get it looking as nice as some of these screenshots, especially the ground textures.

That is interesting! I think I might switch to nVidia myself. I have an ATI5850 and struggle to get perfectly smooth performance.

More fantastic screenshots Soya as always. Really enjoyed those videos too. Also had a look at some of your other FSX Youtube videos, very good, lovely selection of music on them too. :)

Is this SB 2500K up and running yet? Hows how are you finding it?

Greetings all,

Here is my latest short series of shots, accompanied with a FSX made video, dedicated to the superbly made area of Shawbury Fields. The 3D objects that are placed on top of Horizon's VFR Gen X scenery with Earth Simulation's Shawbury Fields, really does make the entire flying experience even more true to live and a real pleasure to view. In with the mix is the very nice C208B Grand Caravan from Carenado.

So please enjoy both the video (best watched at 1080p) and the screen shots:

Delicious. I'm still tweaking and tuning a bit, installing traffic etc, but here's a quick shot of what I've got so far. I've extended cloud draw distance and LOD Radius as well as increasing water to 2x high, and still get sharper textures and smoother flight (nice solid 30fps)

Can anyone else confirm if they notice any performance difference when using different WideViewAspect settings in the cfg? I have a widescreen monitor and had used the True setting but tonight I have discovered I get much better performance when I set it to False.

Has anyone else ever tried changing this value and if so did you notice any difference? I am getting a constant 30fps now (internal limiter) with REX2 set up at highest quality clouds. Low level flying with most sliders all maxed out.
