** The Official Space Flight Thread - The Space Station and Beyond **

Space habitation is really fascinating. The human body is not made for zero g environments and human bones will begin to calcify very quickly (1% a month) without gravity.

The astronauts onboard the ISS have to exercise for 2 hours every day to keep body internals in check. There is a whole lot more to it than just the body though. Long term space flight anywhere is reasonable distance with physical thrust is impossible without serious risks to both health and engineering articles.

Cool Worlds recently outlined the main bits in an excellent video on the need for artificial gravity, but the comfortable zone for humans is very thin, and the parameters needed are quite extensive.

All citations/academic sources are in the video description. Probably one of the most indepth channels to sub to for anything space related.

The risks to space travellers sanity from disrupted neural circuits due to radiation effects has been researched, and is quite severe. It poses a very significant risk for any proposed long trip, to Mars, for instance.

No worries, as I say, well worth watching his other videos as they're al equally excellent and make you think.

Here's a new one more, probably not purely space related, but quite cool all the same.

Grab a tea thermos and biscuits though, it's a 35 minute ride

Waiting for tomorrow, might watch it live GMT1400H..

NASA TV coverage (no idea about SpaceX's live show; usually an hour or two before launch) starts around 17:15BST tomorrow and launch is predicted to be 21:33BST, although weather (currently 60% GO for tomorrow) dictates.

So excited for the crew Dragon launch. I'm not sure if it quite trumps the sheer spectacle of the Falcon Heavy test flight, but I'm hyped.

Falcon Heavy was amazing. Simultaneous landing of the 2 boosters side by side was epic. :D

The suits still look like they're biker leathers with a cool helmet. Was hoping for the whistling handbags and the like.

Oh, stopped for a 'comfort break'.

T minus 2 hours and 57 minutes.

[edit]

Currently 50:50 for launch. :(

No way today

What's the difference to suits on this compared to say shuttle and soyuz? They look very cheap tbh. Like something out of the Avengers.

They're 3D printed, or at least the helmets are, and are fully customised for the particular astronaut. And it's funny you should mention the Avengers as these suits were designed by the designer for Capt. America: Civil War and Batman v Superman.
