** The Official Space Flight Thread - The Space Station and Beyond **

Is this the first time the SLS has actually lifted off?

yes, nasa doesn't operate like space x, so the only test flights that nasa do are actual missions masquerading as test flights, they are not real test flights, the tests were done on computers and ground equip, ment in the 10 years prior

So this first mission is just a fly around of the moon for the Orion capsule and to test the heatshield on re-entry, another reason for mannequins and sensors. Also weird to ulimately get on the moon they're relying on Elon's Starship to do the moon landing, seems like a waste of resources to send up Orion to have the crew then swap to starship in space to go on the moon, why not just go all the way in Starship ?
Getting to the Moon and landing on it are two seperate challenges. The Orion capsule is for travel to, from and around space, and will take the astronauts to the Lunar Gateway and back. For landing on the Moon itself, they've chosen a different vehicle so that you don't have to worry about making that one capable of re-entry or make Orion cabable of landing on the lunar surface. As both have a huge number of challenges, it's much easier to make two seperate vehicles and both have been made by different contractors.

Luckily Starship (or whatever varient of it ends up being the HLS) has several years to go before it's required to make the first landing, and hopefully there's some sort of a backup plan if either vehicle hits some catastrophic problem which derails the program completely.

Also, Starship hasn't gotten above 12km yet so has pretty much everything to prove. Orion has proven a few things, although SLS is mostly in the same boat as Starship.

Yeah HLS/Starship is a weak point in the moon landing strategy at this stage, Congress should have allocated enough money so NASA could bring 3 partners online so it has 3 moon landers it could choose from, maybe use one just for cargo and one just for crew and one as a backup

But because of budget constraints, NASA could only choose one and that one is HLs/Starship and it needs to land cargo, crew and be its own backup, so it better work because if it doesn't then probably no moon landings till 2030 or later and by the time another moon lander is ready SLS project may be killed off

I'm wondering if the delays will push SLS outside of its launch window for today? I thought (maybe wrong) that there was 2hr window starting at 1230GMT and if the delays keep going they're going to be pushed up close to that end time.

Watching Everyday Astronaiuts stream instead, seems far better than the official NASA livestream so far which keeps blanking and playing the trailer over and over but I'll drop back to the NASA one for the actual launch I think.

it will be called off today they have an issue with one of the engines and theres also cracks in the thermal protection

"Teams also are assessing what appears to be a crack in the thermal protection system material on one of the flanges on the core stage. The flanges are connection joints that function like a seam on a shirt, are affixed at the top and bottom of the intertank so the two tanks can be attached to it."

Engineers are asking for a "little more time" to troubleshoot engine 3 of the rocket after it failed to reach the required temperature, NASA has said.

Speaking on the agency's live feed, a spokesperson said the team is on standby at the moment while engineers get back to the director with a "go forward plan".

The launch countdown has been paused but it's still not clear if it will be delayed
