***The Official Starfield Thread*** (As endorsed by TNA)

Level 10 now and and exploring NA. The game is huge and I barely scratched the surface.

I see now what people are saying about graphics. One minute it looks awesome, next minute it looks like a PS3 game

But ya know, ultimately who cares when one is having so much fun? Well worth my £40 :D

Based on what I have seen this will easily be my GOTY. As much as I enjoyed Cyberpunk 2077, I don't think I will quite get this much fun replaying that with the new expansion. But we will see I guess.

It is because Bethesda Games Studio has made sure the textures can fit into 8GB of VRAM so some textures are great and others not so great. Some reviewers have commented on this, and it should have had more options for cards with more VRAM. That means we might get an HD pack in the future, but modders will probably release some of their own textures before that.

Should be sorted out for a subsequent replay in the future I am sure.

Have tried to stay out of this thread as not wanting any spoilers but have a question for those that using ultrawide monitors. Since I seen there is no FVV slider in the game, are you playing as is or using one of the many FOV mods over at Nexus, and if so, which one is the best to use ? I have the Dell 38" Alienware AW3821DW if that matters.

I’m looking forward to some of the potential texture mods. I think the hand crafted areas look great and I just watched a planet fall from the desert of Akila.

I want mine to be stock until I see how early patches go. So I have left mine with FSR for now because despite all the pixel peeping at 4K, I can see no difference between FSR and DLSS at 80% scaling and between 0% and 20% sharpening (my preferred settings).

I have been contemplating using my son’s 7900 XT for this game. Because OC vs OC it’s ~20% faster for Starfield than my 4080 and does not need upscaling at all.

Oh, ok, im not sure where ive gone wrong then lol i have done exactly like it states in the install instructions...pasted the data file in documents/mygames/starfield......then i created a txt document called StarfieldCustom.ini in the same place and pasted the 3 lines there.

Do you know what i have done wrong at all?

Thanks
Same for me, doesn't make sense as the FOV lines from the same StarfieldCustom.ini file I've made is clearly working, but the adjusted blacks are definitely not. Tried everything for about an hour last night before giving up. Everything is 100% correct yet it's not doing nowt yet for many others it is. Done it so many times now, checked everything, copied and pasted, created my own file, typed in from scratch, copied for the pastebin link to not get the hidden curser mark at the end of the lines whatever it's called etc. Nothing. Even seen a post on Nexusmods saying theirs wasn't working, so didn't make the StarfieldCustom in mydocs but pasted the 1st line in the Custom.ini file found in the root of Starfield, and added the single line of code under the [archive] line. But still wont work on mine. Even tried that forcing hdr program.

Nothing seems to get it working which is weird as hell.

I'm also doing the UC quests and they have indeed been very good. I much prefer questing to planetary stuff, I'm finding that a bit boring and feel like I'm getting more xp this way. Far more engaging for me anyway, but each to their own with this kind of game.

Been some excellent side missions too, especially the Mantis mission. Well worth doing that one.
That one bugged for me….

I got to the bottom
of the dungeon, killed all the pirates but the guy i needed to talk to before the turrets just kept cowering and wouldn’t speak. Also wasn’t high enough level to hack the computer and had run out of med packs to deal with those damn turrets

Which mod is that?

Also, this is what the NPCs look like in the game :p

Looks like everyone is on the disco biscuits

Are you on Windows 10 or 11? I see a lot of these “fixes” require AutoHDR and that is Win 11 only.

Re the med pack issue (had the same on this quest at LVL 8)

You can kill that guy no problem. Take out the turrets one by one in between go for a 7 hour kip on the cots which are at the back of the room “crouching guy” is in

I finally upgraded my ship spending all 73k I had saved up + the value of the starter ship which is about 7k.

One of my pet peeves in these kind of games (not just Starfield), is that you can change direction mid jump. On some of the lower gravity locations you make full 360 circles post jump.

It’s the funnest game I’ve played in years and years.

The graphics can be really changeable. Landed on a moon that was absolutely breathtaking, then did a quest that felt like I was playing and looking at Halo ODST, but, the quests are really fun.

That been said, after watching worth a buy's review, I found it pretty eye opening that is it just a fast travel simulator, but tell me a game which isnt now? Ive come to expect all AAA games with a "open world" is just fast travel spam, Go some place once and then never have to travel there again. It's a bit heart breaking really, i would have loved them to actually make a game where you had at least get back to your ship to enable the fast travel, or just in orbit maybe.

Something he did mention that ive not seen other talk about is the Perk system, fallout, elder scrolls, Witcher etc if you didnt have the mastery or right amount of exp in a game system eg lockpicking, computing you can still go ahead and give it ago, maybe use up all your chances / picks in the process but never locked you out, I think they've made a big mistake here with immersion, it felt good been able to do something right out of the gate with zero skill or time into it and you got past a mastery mini game, it felt like massive progress. Just putting a lvl on things and not able to give it ago is lazy design and removes all rpg element in my eyes.
And it looks like it’s the same with every perk / system in the game.

Thank goodness I’ve never listened to that twit and can make up my own mind or I’d have missed some fantastic games, he didn’t like Zero Dawn either. There are quite a few loading screens, but once you realise you don’t need to go into the map to travel it’s much more immersive. I also quite like the perk system, I think it’s actually more RPG than it’s ever been and it means you can become a god overnight.

The issue is if they did offer more detailed textures that used 12GB~16GB of VRAM,there will be moaning from PCMR about 8GB cards not working at Ultra settings. But now people are realising for larger games with more varied environments it would be useful to have additional options on top,and I am saying that as a person with an 8GB VRAM dGPU.

He doesn't like the console orientated duck and roll type of combat, because he used to design custom maps for games like Quake in the 90s(IIRC). Witcher 3 is the same and he didn't like it. I can find that combat style annoying, but OTH I didn't like the combat system in the Mass Effect series either and still thought they were great games.

Well, unless MSI Afterburner acts up, I'm not limited by the CPU on a 4080 and 5800x3d (not yet anyway).

Not that great looking, but running around 60fps or under in New Atlantis :)) On a freaking 4080, 1080p native
Just wow. Only thing running worse (but better with FG), is CB with PT, but at least that one looks better.

Fingers crossed is just nVIDIA's driver acting up. Going full power the GPU should draw around 300W, but is only 200W there now.

How do you play the game with all that down the side is it not a bit distracting….
