***The Official Starfield Thread*** (As endorsed by TNA)

This looks more Fallout than Elder Scrolls to me. I've never been a lover of Fallout, but I absolutely adore Elder Scrolls. I think it's the fantasy lore and the intimate nature of Elder Scrolls, like sword/shield instead of guns/tech etc.

That being said, I will play this game when it arrives.
Opposite for me. Fallout 4's post-apocalyptic world absolutely gripped me, whereas Oblivion was very much a "what's all the fuss about?" experience.

Hope it's great either way as I can't wait to get stuck into it.

You played the other Fallouts? Because 4 is the worst of the lot in my opinion of course.

I much prefer a silent antagonist where I can carve my own destiny - I don't give two hoots about Shaun!

Looking at my 6650xt and a video of this I think I may have to look at a gpu upgrade or just get an xbox

Game looks awesome but I think it will run like crap on pc for a while

Couldn't get into fallout at all just didn't do anything for me. Skyrim I still play to this day, well I mod it to this day loved it so much. This I think I'll be giving a miss unless the reviews are exceptional.

So I went back and relistened to Todd Howard on the Lex Fridman podcast. The issue with low quality procedual environments is something Todd had considered. From what I gathered, rather than go the full procedual route, they have a number (probably a very large number) of premade environmental tiles. My understanding is these tiles are just sections of a map that you would find in any game. They then have an algorithm that they use to stitch these tiles together to create the different planets. So it's partially procedually generated at the development end, which is how they generated the 100 systems. But it seems that the planets are fixed on the user end. So if you visited planet X-175 in system 49 and I visited it, we should have an identical experience.

So hopefully it should be okay.

Some other things (Sorry if I'm repeating stuff that people already know)

Systems have recommended levels.

Todd mentioned in the interview that the different space suits give you "buffs for the gases, the toxicity or the temperature on various planets". There could be other environmental hazards planet side, that he did not mention. I'm assuming if there are buffs there are debuffs if you come unprepared to a type of planet.

Lex mentions that space travel in this game is considered dangerous. Todd in reply states that there is some effort involved in space travel and that they have dialed it back during development (from what I inferred it is to ensure that the game is fun). The example he gives is that early on "you use to run out of fuel" but they found it to be a fun killer. From what he described it felt like mining for fuel in these situations was a tedious chore, that was in the way of want you really wanted to do. He then mentions players will build their ships so "they have all the right things for safety".
Doesn't sound good tbh especially the lack of fuel.

Fun killer?

The recent trailer looks very good - but then again this is Bethesda and Todd Howard.

"it just works" - we will see......

Why doesn't it sound good?

One thing that I wasn't sure about from the conversation is if fuel has been removed or if they made running out of fuel a rare experience. Either way I agree with them that running out of fuel is a fun killer. It would be an interesting experience the first few times it happens. But after that it is annoying. It doesn't add to the main gameplay loop (which from what I gather is to explore and experience the world), it actively stops the main gameplay loop. That's why hunger and thirst mechanics are not often seen in RPG games outside of survival games. Rather than exploring the world, every x hours you need stop and cook a meal.

Satisfactory is a factory building game, the first form of power generation is a biomass burner that you need to fill with leaves and organic matter to keep the lights on. It gets tedious very quickly having to constantly search for leaves. You end up rushing to get coal power, which automates the filling of coal into the coal generators.

Edit: Fuel is still in the game,

A kind of Power Armour in space then :)
Turns out this info was in the deep dive. :o

Some other things I noticed on a second skim through for other people who may not have noticed.
The properties are Physical, energy and Electro magnetic (radiation?) on one level. I believe those are defense stats based on weaponry because the symbols match the symbols for the attack power of the weapons they show.
Then you have thermal, airbourne (maybe pathogens, there is indication in the skill tree that you character can become infected and implications that you may require medicine to recover), corrosive and radiation. So defense against enviromental hazards.

We can see some of the player customisable options here. So the helmet properties are separate from the space suits properties.

I think packs might be boost packs

I can see a few different ammo types. (Is this something that is done in other bethesda games?)
7.77mm
.50 MI
Cutter
7.5mm
11mm

Here is an example of a weapon that does energy damage

For anyone coming across this post in future the images will auto delete in 4 months, from the date of posting.

I'll definitely get this at release. I expect that to be a bug-filled mess, but, y'know...

It now looks way better than the previous showings, which didn't grab me at all.

My biggest worry is that the base building will feel like work. That stopped me playing fallout 4- it was just an annoying chore.

Another is that the planet system will be an immersion breaker. The joy of skyrim/ witcher is i can just "head north" and see what happens, without regard to planning or objectives.. Having to leave planet x-2 and enter a spaceship and select a different planet... I'm not sure that will work.

There's a point where additional gameplay features are just unwelcome complications.

I have an i7 8700k, so expect to be upgrading that shortly afterwards.
