*** The Official Steam Deck Thread ***

lol :D

I looked at the diagonal size difference between the old phone I'm using and the Steam Deck, and it's 5.5 VS 7. So more in line with my current phone I have width wise (turned sideways), but more height. I'll give my current phone a try for a closer experience.

If I end up liking it, I can see myself playing more platformy games.

EDIT: I just bought 'Ori and the blind forest' a platformer to put my money where my mouth is for a test.

im just saying AMD has a SOC capable of probably going toe to toe with a m1 chip and still runing x86 and fully fledged PC games.

I bet the battery life of this device when doing none gaming tasks is quite good

But that's it its still running x86.

Windows, apple and everyone is going ARM and RISC so why would they care AMD has made what effectively a legacy chip.

The only thing I'll say is that I tried playing games on a phone with a controller wrapped around it (Razer Kishi), via Steam Link and Stadia, but the games for this small of a screen just don't seem to make sense. They just are not enjoyable. I'm not a big console guy anyway, as I tend to buy consoles then barely use them.

I'm curious if going from a 5inch wide (mobile) screen to a 7inch (Steam Deck) screen is really going to make any real difference to that experience. Do I really want to be experiencing AAA games on a tiny screen where I don't feel immersed? Things like platformers etc seem so much better for this setup.

I guess I'll see if I take up my reservation slot in Q2 2022.

Does it have hdmi out?

As being able to plug it into a hotel TV would be a big selling point t

What else was it supposed to use? All steam games are x86 are they not?

Sorry it was about the "apple m1 chip being in serious troubble".

A new x86 soc isn't really a worry for nvidia and apple in comparison to the m1 chip and its features.

Have you ever owned a 7 inch tablet it's hardly a tiny screen and is the perfect size for a handheld.

I've owned several tablets now and in several sizes. The ten inch tablets are terrible for anything other than used when sitting still for hours and placing them on a stand.

To hold in your hand you want a 7 inch even 8 inches feels chunky.

I've probably owned around 5 tablets in each format and currently have 2 X 10 inch an 8 inch and a 7 inch.

People talking about resolution again have no real clue. It doesn't matter on such a small screen. In fact I game at 1440p on a 32 inch screen and people would say that max for 1440p is 27 inch. Absolute rubbish. Nothing to do with eyesight either I have well above average eyesight as I can read signs others cannot from miles away, etc.

Going from 5 inch phone to 7 inch is literally like triple the size if not more.

The real issue with this is handhelds just suck. Nintendo is the only company who have done well and that's probably due to the type of games they make for them. They have Pokémon, etc.

I can't see any normal person buying this only hardcore enthusiasts and most will use it for retro emulators I bet. Because those games suit handheld better. The Res will also suit that type of usage a lot better too.

@Psycho Sonny yes, I have had hand helds in the past (Game gear), and my daughter has a Wii U and a Switch. I just found that the whole mobile gaming thing never really appealed to me when I got older. I never understand why anyone wants to play a competitive multiplayer first person shooter on a tiny mobile screen with touch controls. Urgh.

7 inches does seem good for viewing and handling. 5 is definitely too small.

Nobody is buying this for CSGO. It will be for games like street fighter. Football manager. RPG.

The only competitive games that will be played on it are chess, etc.

I am mainly buying for single player games and mainly old ones at that.

Love the idea of having all my Resident Evil and Final Fantasy games in one place on a handheld. Don't see myself ever needing another handheld console unless it is an upgrade to SteamDeck. Can now just buy indie games like Dead Cells and Hades on steam which I played on the Switch :D

The fact you can't get one for ages. I'm not really bothered. I'll see how the launch goes and what reviews are like. I'd like to use it docked downstairs. I could use a laptop for this which would only cost a few quid extra and be available today. I seen a 1650 lenovo for cheap on HUKD earlier that would be ideal.

As a handheld I've bought several and quite frankly never used them. I'm too busy when I'm on the move or it just doesn't feel right. I use my switch docked 100% of the time. Handhelds aren't for all gamers. It's why Nintendo have only ever cracked the market. This one will be interesting though as it can essentially play any pc game. That is unique. It should do well because that is a very good selling point and a lot of people like the type of games that suit handhelds.

Yea, but what about when sitting on the toilet? :p

I find handheld comes in handy when not well and stuck in bed or something.

My SteamDeck will be with me on launch, if I do not like it for any reasons I can sell it without making a loss :D

Just get Game Pass, both of those games are on it. I won’t be buying any steam games for my Steam Deck.
