***The Official Wolfdale 8200/8400/8500 Overclocking Thread ***

I think a few people were asking the size of the new coolers that come with the wolfies so heres a few pics for comparison,E6600 cooler on the left and a E8400 cooler on the right:

Nice work!

I think I have the same memory as you, so will have a go at slackening off the timings and see if I can hit 4Ghz.

What voltage are you entering in the bios to get that?

With native 1333MHz FSB what does this mean for overclocking? I mean the multipliers are low so to get high overclocks the FSB will have to very high.

I mean I have an E4300, it runs at 9x200MHz = 1.8GHz. The 200MHz when quad pumped gives 800MHz. To overclock the 1.8GHz stock to 3.2GHz I just have to up the FSB from 200MHz to 356MHz (1422MHz when quad pumped). No problem at all and below the spec of 800MHz PC6400 RAM. A 78% overclock with no problems.

These chips though, based on 1333MHz (333MHz actual) need the FSB to be pushed to almost 600MHz to get a similar 78%. That’s not going to happen! Maybe around 450MHz is the highest we can reliably hope so only a 35% overclock. :(

Thanks, no you don't have the same RAM, replaced it with Ballistix PC8500 as anything over 470 FSB was "flakey". Now I can go for max. suicide run, I wanna try for <10s SuperPI 1M:D

Vcore is 1.52v

Ah I see! Apologies!!

This overclocking lark is mad, I said to myself I'd be happy with 3.6Ghz, but then thought 'no, if I got some faster RAM, I could hit 4Ghz+'... :)

Off to source some 8400 RAM now. Where will it end?!!

Fitted an E8400 into a Gigabyte GA P35 DS3P (4 x 1GB Crucial Ballistix PC25300) this afternoon, running it at 4.2GHz @ 1.375v at the moment, was able to get 4.4GHz @ 1.425v, however, would not boot at 4.5GHz didn't play around with setting in BIOS due to time availability. Must say am very pleased with it so far....
