The Olympic Ranting Thread

Did I just witness someone defending carrying a knife for the purpose of cutting loose threads?

I carry a pen knife when I'm on a long cycle, for obvious reasons. I can't think of any day to day situation where one would urgently need a knife.

Yet Another Manly Asim Thread.

Edit: to stay on topic, I think the olympics was and is a great idea. And I'm more than willing to let a few Londoners' massively convenienced lifestyle suffer for it.

wow, so much whinging, can't you guys man up for 2 weeks till it's over with? It's the UK's chance to impress the whole world but all you guys seem to care about is that your bus takes 10 minutes longer.
lol

We couldn't impress the whole world if we tried - UK is a laughing stock & us hosting the bore-lympics is a laugh.

It should be put on 1 channel & 1 only - I cannot wait for it to be over - All that money we could have used to build hospitals & care for our elderly, Instead of this waste of money.

I hope we don't get a single medal & we never host this boredom again.

bus drivers don't know what the hells going on with these bus/olympic combo lanes so they're driving around erratically pulling into lanes at the very last minute, 3 extremely near misses and its only the first morning :(

Isn't that the norm for bus drivers?.

On a more serious note, is this just bad training by the bus companies then?. Have they not prepared wisely?.

I'd hate to a British athlete, given all the.stupidly wild hopes of the nation being pinned on them, like whenever England play anyone at football. "It's been X amount of years since 1966, surely this is our year...."

No it isn't the UK's chance to impress the world its the UK's chance to make a massive loss by hosting an event that has never drawn profit for the host nation, and worst of all their using UK taxes to fund the English Olympics >.<
Not entirely true?

1984: Los Angeles Olympic Games made profits of US $250 million.

1988: Seoul Olympic Games made profits of US $300 million, a record high for a government-run Olympiad.

1992: Barcelona Olympic Games made profits of US $5 million.

1996: Atlanta Olympic Games made profits of US $10 million.

2000: Sydney Olympic Games Organizing Committee generated an income of US $1.756 billion.

2004: Athens Olympic Games ended in a loss.

it's still a farce though :p

Pretty much sums it up. Just get over yourself.

Seeing your wish for rich parents does make me wonder how old you are?Presumably not old enough to drive or own a car.

You REALLY should get a life

Owning a car in London is not a necessity. I don't have a car. I don't need a car. What I need is a public transport network to do the job it's supposed to.

I can't wait till the Olympics are over.

Thought we had matured past this meme....obviously not...

What I need is a public transport network to do the job it's supposed to.

It does....I don't think anyone designs a transport system to cope with the extra capacity demand of an exceptional event that happens every 50-70 yrs...

I can't wait till the Olympics are over.

Hey, It's just one of those diverse benefits you keep banging on about that makes living in London so wonderful :p

Oh, the whole world is impressed. If they aren't impressed yet, they will be very impressed after TV crews roll into town and spot that ghetto soviet banner "Poplar welcomes" on derelict half collapsed estate next to Balfron Towers on A12. As a driver commuter I am very impressed too.
I am impressed by signage that creates absolutely crazy traffic issues by providing up to six different dates and hours about multitude of different olympic related things on the same stretch of the road to buses and cars often driven by people who don't read english fluently enough to understand what's expected of them when passing such amount of reading material at 30mph.

I am impressed that they cancelled all turns across entire The Highway from limehouse tunnel all the way to Tower Bridge and managed not to provide any signage at all that if you take Limehouse Tunnel you won't be able to turn for 4 miles until you find yourself in £10 congestion charge zone. Yeah, turning right is for kittens! Real men drive straight only. Like a boss

I am impressed that in most places we managed to create olympic lanes with use of top notch modern technology.
Technology that squeezes five lanes of traffic into two:

Teleport two lanes of traffic before road turns into £120 bus lane and £130 olympic lane

Get rid of traffic completely without providing any diversions:

I am sure it's perfectly reasonable to ask millions of commuters to be late or suspend their business, and it wouldn't be reasonable to ask someone from "olympic family" to be aware of traffic and perhaps turn up at event site appropriately earlier. I've never been so proud in my life. :D

Well, it was a ridiculous statement. A lot of people are better off not driving in London.

It does....I don't think anyone designs a transport system to cope with the extra capacity demand of an exceptional event that happens every 50-70 yrs...

So that means it's perfectly fine to have to leave at 6am to get to central London for 9 then? even though it takes 40 minutes usually...

I like diversity. I don't like not being able to get around in the city I live in because the public transport network is FUBAR'd.

My commute from Kingston to Vauxhall has actually been better this week although I'm getting a calm before the store vibe about it.

Need to travel from London to Brighton Friday lunch for a funeral, hope the opening ceremony doesn't affect travel out of London too much.

Asim - are you talking about Romford Road? I have to cycle most of the length of that from Manor Park to Stratford and then beyond. It's an absolute nightmare now - the traffic is backed up all the way to Forest Gate! I think the re phasing of the traffic lights by Nando's on the Broadway are the issue.
Once I'm over Bow flyover and onto the A11 traffic levels are back to normal.

Err...yes...It's not forever, just a few weeks :)

I like diversity. I don't like not being able to get around in the city I live in because the public transport network is FUBAR'd.

No, the transport system would be FUBAR'd if they didn't put in these systems...Every city has to provide this transport contingency since Atlanta '96 when the transport system collapsed and the entire city ground to a halt with athletes missing events and ceremonies!

So you think it's bad now.....it would be even worse with complete chaos and gridlock if the 'Olympic system' was not in place.

From what I've seen so far the traffic measures are causing the issue, I haven't noticed more vehicles on the road!

Can't say I'm overly fussed with the Olympics. People seem deliriously happy To 'be part' of it even though they're not at all :D however, I've never been one to get in the way over others delusions so rock on! :p

But in truth, I like the Olympics, I just wish it was elsewhere.
