awww baby, it's only down to the fact that i've been messing about in photoshop longer than you meaning I have a bit more experience. Keep progressing and playing with it and you'll get some amazing sigs popping up soon;

-know which colours stand out on the forums and make it do so.
-contrast is eye catching
-choose the font for the style you're going for

I dont really know what colours stand out with our blue and are eye catching?
Do you have to guess with fonts?

Me neither most of the time, but I just think the blue you chose there for the font didn't as much as it could, that's not me taking a dig :).

Sometimes, in clean looking sigs nice and simple sans-serif fonts work such as helvetica, tahoma, andale sans, or in others dirty fonts work as you'll see mrdbristol using quite a lot - download some good ones; base02, broken15, distress, skizzed. You just have to have a see really, lol. :)

right click > select all > right click again > stroke > 1px looks good > select - bam!

I think that looks great, nice warmth too it, although some slight changes I would make would be to lower the horizon following the photography rule of thirds, so that the sky takes up a bit over half of the picture, and then your font is a serif font and I think that you might benefit from using a sans-serif font (no curly bits on the end of the letters) which look more modern, and sit it nice on the image, loooking good though mr superstar :)
