The ongoing Elon Twitter saga: "insert demographic" melts down

Well a mate of mine whos been at twitter for over a decade just messaged to say his work laptop was remotely wiped and none of his logins work anymore.

Pretty brutal way to find out youve been sacked :D

If that is true and not just some mistake, why is Musk's twitter handling this like a petulant child? (That is mostly a rhetorical question)

I somewhat agree but Twitter is at the end of the day, a basic web application. Reddit for example only has 700 employees. The folk he wants to attract are those that want to do 80 hours a week. They want to point to a global mass market product and say "I implemented that". It is playing on the ego of high-end silicone valley devs.

And tbh, anyone that doesn't want that is exactly as you said - free to jump ship.
IIRC reddit basically only provides the staff to run the servers and deal with advertising for the service.

Actual reddit content moderation is I believe done largely by volunteers in the subreddits.

So Twitter is going to have far more staff even if just because they do content moderation "in house" using paid staff, good luck to Twitter in keeping advertisers if they lose the moderation as IIRC reddit had a massive issue for years with advertising after they tried a low/no moderation policy for certain things and it took a long time for them to get those advertisers back if my memory server.

Anyone that wants to work 80 hour weeks is mad IMO

Work/life balance and all that.
People that work 80 hour weeks often aren't counting hours tho. I work with a lot of data science folk that get mad when I can't give them a problem complex or dirty enough... then however long it takes them "is their problem".

If Mr. Musk can run this Twitter business effectively with so many less staff he should be brought in to blitz our NHS and the Civil Service!
It would start with a questionnaire to determine your life's "net present value".

"Sorry sir, we deem you uneconomical to repair, please proceed to the blender"

I like the irony of Elon saying he is all about furthuring humanity, then buys a company and makes half the employees jobless in the most cold ways

We've been hearing from Twitter employees who find themselves locked out of their own work accounts - without being told whether they have been sacked or not.

The BBC spoke to one employee in London who described how his work laptop screen went grey. He says this is what happens when a laptop is "remotely wiped".

"You don't wipe a laptop... if you're planning to keep somebody on", he says.

I guess if you treat people as eggs, then you can't make your humanist omlette without breaking a few eggs

Delusional... The NHS has over 1.7 million employees and completely disproportionate to the UK population. A perfect example of mis-management, corruption and irresponsible use of taxpayers money.
I think the nuance of his point is that there is a shortage of docs and nurses, irrespective of the other 1.3m dossers. (estimated)
