The ongoing Elon Twitter saga: "insert demographic" melts down

if he just shut his mouth and did a silent takeover without tweeting every few hours things probably would have gone a lot smoother.

It's amazing how often new owners come in, make sweeping changes, rub people up the wrong way, lose key staff and end up spaffing the company up the wall. Seen it loads of times but never on this grand scale

Ironically, if he'd made the decision to buy Twitter a few months later it would be Parag having to do layoffs by now* and Elon could have probably got it for half the price and far less debt/interest hanging over him! He'd have much more slack to iterate, make mistakes and build the product etc..

As it happens he's tried to get out of the deal, totally failed to do that with his bots excuse and has massively overpaid so has the ticking clock of all that debt/interest to service and add to that he's not exactly had a smooth few days with the initial implementations of his product changes either!

*Granted Parag wouldn't have been as brutal at 50% (wouldn't have had that additional debt and issues with advertisers etc..) but he'd still likely have had to sack a double-digit %, even Facebook/Meta has recently (13% of their workforce) and that's completely unheard of for them.

It's ironic, that this purchase has exposed Elon as being either totally out of his depth and/or a liar.

If he had just sat at the top of Tesla and Space-X, tweeting the odd meme and doing the occasional presentation people would still think he was a genius.

I mean, he is a genius. You don't get to be as wealthy as he is and found 3 society changing companies and be a complete idiot. Hes just let that get to his head and thought that he was mustard and could take any business and "fix it". All his other successes have been startups where he has been on the ground and built a company to fix a problem or found a niche in the market.

Thats a completely different kettle of fish to coming into an established business that you massively overpaid for and trying to rip up the playbook aggressively to make it profitable. What he is doing might even work in a "private" company but one with millions of customers where your business model is customer communication is madness. Twitter is also a cesspit of intolerance and hot takes. This was always going to be a complete **** show.

Doesn't mean he isn't a genius. Just means his arrogance wrote a cheque his capabilities couldn't cash.

Elon has always been a bit of a bull *******. The whole "Elon time" comes from his almost laughable timelines for his products.

He said they'd send a "Red Dragon" craft to Mars in 2018.

Said they'd have humans on Mars by 2022

Hyperloop was just a way to stop California investing in high speed rail. Shameful really as the US needs better rail.

The problem is so many people take his word as almost devine. He is clearly very very intelligent and driven but just watching his behaviour on Twitter shows he's incredibly thin skinned, hasn't thought out his ideas for Twitter and is going with the -throw everything at the wall and see what sticks- approach. That likely can work with SpaceX and Tesla but this is a social media platform where we are the product and advertisers are the clients. I'm sure to both this approach just seems chaotic and the only ones loving it are the ones that seem to love chaos, that want to tear it all down.

Musk didn't start Tesla btw. He was a big investor and had a large hand in running the company, but it was originally founded by 2 other people. There was a lawsuit around about 2009 I think, the outcome of which was that 5 people can now claim to be 'co-founders' of Tesla.

Apologies, you are correct. He has however served as CEO since 2008 which has seen them go from a tiny startup to one of the highest valued companies in the world. He is fundamentally a very smart guy who knows how to run a business.

I feel I should clarify that I never said he doesn't know how to run a business.

But Twitter seems like a major misstep and totally out of his wheel-house.

But not a social media platform, and not how the tech of a social media platform works.

He isn't smart enough to stop himself not do both of these.

It would be much smarter decision to pay the billion dollar settlement than to do what he is doing. He sold almost $5 billion Tesla Shares last week!

His ego is too big that clouds his judgment, smart? I don't know, he isn't stupid...but clearly lacking some IQ points in certain areas.

The smart move would be go "ah, you got me, joke went too far. Here is your billion dollars". Instead he went "you are not getting a billion for free. How about I pay you $44 billion, overpriced, and then come and burn the house down. My ego needs this win."
