The ongoing Elon Twitter saga: "insert demographic" melts down

Seems twitter blue tick is the success we all expected. Not one user on this forum is brave enough to say they've paid for it, or hasn't, and now the taliban are getting blue ticks, getting authority to theirs tweets thanls to twitters change of rules. What a way to devalue something.

This paid for service should never have been a replacement of the blue tick.

Anyone with a ounce of common-sense would know that it would get abused from the get-go but ol' Musky needs the money.
I am surprised they allow the Taliban on the platform though.

For reference, BBC article - https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-64294613 - and supposedly Twitter has dealt with it - https://www.wionews.com/south-asia/taliban-makes-use-of-elon-musks-twitter-paid-verification-553369.

So... the Taliban, actual government officials, were happily using and continue to use twitter but paying for a premium account is a red line punished by being knocked down to a free account...

That sure demonstrated a quality moral position.

They have accounts on Twitter, what are you talking about?
Free speech in name only, when you're pushed to the bottom because Blue tick paying members pay and get better exposure. Elon hopes it'll be a race to the top, and that eventually everyone has blue ticks that those that don't, may as well leave as they never get seen.

However what happens is elon simps don't even pay for the blue tick, but the taliban do.

The big irony is that the Tabilan had free speech but then wanted to pay $8 for it.

Didn't Twitter have 3+ billion in 'cash' assets at it's last financial reports? I'd expect them to make the first few payments at least, especially given Musk fired half the staff, hasn't been paying them the full severance, or paying rent :p

It'll be a while, if ever, before it fails financially I reckon, more likely to be overtaken by some new startup and just fade into the history books...

Goodbye Twitter. It's been fun.
Is indirectly paying for a service you enjoy really that big of a deal? Asking as I am not familiar with the 3rd party apps. Seems like they unfairly used the Twitter platform to make money for themselves and cut Twitter out of the revenue share though.

Theres probably a half way house that doesnt suddenly kill off the app eco system thats helped Twitter keep users.

Make apps show the ads served by Twitter and block Api access to any apps not doing this.

Alternatively charge apps for Api calls , the apps can then either charge the end users a subscription / offer their own ads to cover costs.
( E.g. Appy Weather on Android , free version has some free data sources for weather that are covered by in app ads, but if you want the better weather data sources that charge more for Api calls, i.e. Dark Sky, then you need to pay for the subscription )

Agreed.

If twitter aren't making any money directly from these apps but the apps are making good money, it's natural that twitter will want it's fair share. I don't think any disagrees with that.
. What is so dumb is just how it's being implemented. Full steam ahead, block all apps without an alternative solution etc. It's like with twitter blue. Why did they rush it so quickly? There was no need to have some new feature out within weeks of Elon taking over. Instead it could have been tested over months and then decided what improvements to make, what the response was, before going live.

I sure do hope twitter can sort itself out, as posts like this are just pure gold

But that would be sensible, not full hardcore coding, got to be seen to be doing something even if that something is killing the product. It's fairly typical of the worst sort of management.

The ban on third party apps is going to hurt Twitter a lot more than any loss of advertising income those apps cost, because in many cases they were being used by the content creators who draw in the "normal" users who view the adverts, and i've already seen several such creators with very large numbers of followers state that they're out. These third party apps were often used because they worked far better than twitters default toolset for many uses from things like a content creator being able to schedule updates easily and reliably, to the ability to share things like large block lists to deal with the bots that always start to follow high profile accounts.

The more I see of how Musk is dealing with twitter the more i'm convinced he doesn't have a clue what he bought, or how twitter functions.

In other news it looks like Musk is refusing to pay for not just the rent on properties and the outstanding contractual obligations towards the employees he fired without consultation and in complete disregard (and ignorance) of the law in multiple countries, he's also reportedly refusing to pay for the legal team Twitter hired to force him to abide by the contract he signed, and i'm guessing those lawyers are possibly going to enjoying winning against him in court again (he's liable to pay their fees as when he bought twitter, he got all the legal obligations twitter had, including any outstanding bills).

Lol I can see why that'd bug him. Imagine getting divorced and you have to pay your partners legal fees.

Of course he brought it on himself.

I do wonder if twitter has any money. It feels like pretty soon we will hear that twitter is just bleeding money to staff etc and has 60 days else it'll be unable to pay anyone.

There's less advertisers now competing for the spots, so the price for each spot naturally must have come down.

Not like a single person here has taken up twitter blue. Where's the money coming from
