They already have been. The cars usually run on hydrogen in an indirect way. It's possible to make an internal combustion engine fueled by hydrogen, but that's not the approach usually used. The approach usually used is to feed hydrogen to fuel cells that generate electricity that's stored in batteries that supply it to the electric motors that drive the car.

Because water doesn't burn at all well and water can't be used to create electricity in fuel cells.

If you're thinking along the lines of extracting hydrogen from water and using that to power the car (either ICE or fuel cell+batteries+motors) then the problem is that it takes a lot of energy to break the bond between the hydrogen and oxygen atoms in water. Far, far more energy than you could get from the resulting hydrogen regardless of whether you burned it or put it through a fuel cell. On top of that, you'd be using electrolysis to break the bonds...and if you already had that much electricity available in the car it would make far more sense to use it to power electric motors driving the car rather than using it to extract hydrogen to feed through fuel cells to generate electricity to power electric motors driving the car. That would be a completely pointless adding of complexity, weight and risk while wasting a lot of the electricity on losses in the addition.

I'm trusting that this is somehow relevant to Elon Musk buying (or not buying) Twitter.
 
You've no trust in me then, it was more an eco thought, Elon going the EV route while i've heard things about hydrogen fuel cells is all. can you tell my eyes are squinty tonight?
When I read news of Hydrogen fuel cells this always comes to mind...

but you have to laugh...Twitter and the complaints of over censoring things...now SC is a private member club. hehe :)
