The ongoing Elon Twitter saga: "insert demographic" melts down

Why are Texas tax payers paying for an investigation of Twitter when they had funding on mental health cut not that long ago?
Because Musk is all up in Texians guts and they fear him doing a "California" on them, hence the political pressure?

Although i didn't realise he waived due diligence, in which case surely this an open-shut case and he'll need to proceed with the purchase or fork up the termination fee?

Elon 'I'm buying Twitter to save free speech' Musk has fired a bunch of his employees for *checks notes* exercising their free speech.

SpaceX fired employees on Thursday who helped write an open letter criticizing CEO Elon Musk's tweets and other recent behavior, according to the New York Times.

Why it matters: Musk is currently attempting to acquire the social media platform Twitter in what he has said is an effort to create a haven for free speech. Musk has repeatedly said that open discussion and debate is necessary for society and democracy to function.

What they're saying: In the open letter, which was first published by The Verge on Thursday, employees wrote that "Elon’s behavior in the public sphere is a frequent source of distraction and embarrassment for us," referring to recent sexual misconduct allegations against the billionaire that he has denied and his recent tweets.

  • "As our CEO and most prominent spokesperson, Elon is seen as the face of SpaceX — every Tweet that Elon sends is a de facto public statement by the company," the letter reads. "It is critical to make clear to our teams and to our potential talent pool that his messaging does not reflect our work, our mission, or our values.”
  • Among other requests, the employees asked SpaceX's executive team to "publicly address and condemn Elon’s harmful Twitter behavior," saying, "SpaceX must swiftly and explicitly separate itself from Elon’s personal brand."
The other side: Gwynne Shotwell, SpaceX’s president and COO, said in an email to employees on Thursday first obtained by the Times that the company investigated and "terminated a number of employees involved" with the letter, though it was unclear how many employees were fired.

Meanwhile, Elon 'still doesn't own Twitter' Musk remains coy on whether or not he will proceed with the purchase. Last time I checked, he still hadn't responded to Twitter's latest release of user data, so this farce could drag on until Christmas.

He only did it to get back in the news again. He even had the former US president, General Mike Flynn and Mike Pillow begging him in the news to reinstate their accounts. It’s been in the headlines for weeks now for one reason or another. It also allowed him to liquidate a load of his vastly over-priced Tesla shares to pretend to pay for it.

What had it cost him? Only a billion dollars - chump change for Elon and it’s stroked his absolutely massive ego.

Musk has a horrendous record on Free speech, this is just a typical example. Employees in various musk businesses hsve the most strict NDA and non-compete clauses in the industry, and unlike other companies thst rarely tske action and only in the most egregious cases, Musk's employees are frequently drsgged to court and sued for massively disproportionate amounts. Any speaking out, whistle blowing or collective action is immediately met with $1000 an hour lawyers. He regularlysues people for libel, pays millions to silence others, sues reporters and media agencies.

He is one of the worst culprits in the world for stifling free speech.

He didn't ban them from Twitter though. His argument is you should be able to speak freely on Twitter, not that you should be criticising your boss on internal comms and suffer no consequences.

Musk is such an idiot. I used to have a lot of respect for the man as he's pushed a lot of things forward technologically but honestly he needs to just wind his neck in and shush for a bit.

I think nost people have the same opinion, snd it isn't because our initial opinion was wrong. Musk has changed dramatically how he comes across, he is getting involved in politics, engaging in culture wars, and he now reportly just coming out with absurd statements.
Smoking s joint in sn interview was fine, randoly callinh the guy in the cave rescue a pedophile with zero evidence was just the start if his spiral downwards in most people's minds

being band from Twitter is harmless, loosing ypur job when providing valid feedback is much more serious.

Calling your boss homophobic and transphobic is valid feedback? If you say so. Either way it's likely to get you fired from any company.

Edit: Ignore the above, that was the Twitter employees, not SpaceX.

It would have been preferable if he had. But of course, he has no power to ban anyone from Twitter right now, since he still doesn't own it.

They're criticising him for not upholding his own company's principles. The same principles he requires everyone else in the company to uphold. I don't believe that's an unreasonable criticism.

Calling your boss homophobic and transphobic

But they didn't do that.

You're right there, the homophobic comment was something else.

But it still stands, him buying Twitter because it is or should be the town square of the internet, isn't to say that he believes ignoring NDAs, spreading trade secrets or putting him in to bad light will be tolerated under "freedom of speech lol". You are conflating the two.

We aren't really going to know exactly what was said, but at least the report said some (not all) of the people involved with the letter were fired because they were pressurising others to sign it and their activism.

Be an activist on Twitter all you want, but it's different in the workplace.

They're deliberately confusing the two, it isn't through a lack of understanding, they're choosing to ignore it because Elon Musk is now on the other side of them in their social war. They don't care about being right, they care about winning, the truth isn't really important. These people will argue for biological men to compete against women, do you think they're bothered about the nuances of Elon Musk's free speech argument? LOL
