The ongoing Elon Twitter saga: "insert demographic" melts down

Well this escalated quickly.

Stepping up an ongoing verbal clash between the two men, Elon Musk said Donald Trump should “hang up his hat” and is too old to run for the Oval Office in 2024, as a poll shows the former president is losing support among Republican voters.

“I don’t hate the man, but it’s time for Trump to hang up his hat & sail into the sunset,” Musk tweeted late Monday, using the same social media platform that he first tried to buy and is now trying to walk away from. The billionaire businessman’s tweet came after Trump, at a public appearance in Alaska last weekend, called Musk a “******** artist” over the Twitter sale.

Trump spoke up after Friday’s announcement, saying the Tesla and SpaceX chief’s deal with Twitter was “rotten” anyway.

The Trump-Musk spat has gone on for a while: Musk said he was contemplating supporting Florida’s governor, Ron DeSantis, as the Republican candidate in the 2024 presidential race.

In Alaska, Trump claimed Musk said he’d previously voted for him; Musk has denied it, though he has also criticized Twitter for banning Trump’s account on the platform after the Capitol attack.

smartest thing elon has said in a while. and he is right. trump has done his time, saild away and let someone else have a go.

it's so weird the republicans have to still deal with trump and the issues he brings. imagine labour right now still dealing with corbyn after all these years, just causing headaches and distractions.

Well it's gone legal.

I was seeing an American lawyer going through some of the paperwork, it turns out that despite Musk signing away his right to review the user numbers etc when he complained Twitter gave him something like 40 terabytes of the raw data that would let people who understood what they were doing to look at the usage patterns over 30 days.

Well that sounds fantastic.

We're basically guaranteed entertainment as he tries to argue his way around his incompetence in signing the contract then also ignoring the pile of data that Twitter gave him anyway :)

On floppy disks...?

As mentioned a few weeks ago I said I thought Elon was either trying to get out of the deal or lower the price when he started kicking off about bots, it's since become apparent that he's trying to get out of the deal however... I'd not rule out the other possibility in that I suspect he's still open to buying albeit at a discount. Whether he could pull that off here is another matter, it would be hilarious though.

Punch cards.

Quite a funny tweet re: the (rational) position Twitter now needs to take to act in their shareholder's interests; Elon isn't a serious person but also we must force Elon to buy the company:

The shareholders interests are to get the most money they can. That would mean Elon buying them out, or paying the difference between the current value of twitter and what was agreed for the sale.

Basically it doesn't matter if he's a "serious person", if you boil the shareholders interests to the most basic it's about money, and he was going to buy the company and take it private which would have meant the shareholders would all have cashed out at a level that is well above what they might have seen otherwise. If as is usually the case with big shareholders all you're really interested in is the money, that's great regadless of what happens to the company later.

Oh man this twitter spat is going to be glorious! Ultimate man child Trump takes on Twitter troll Musk. Fight!
And to think Elon only just announced that he switched to Republicans because they are the nice party.

Elon can't catch a break.

Bidding for twitter really was a big mistake for him, not just financially but also how he is viewed now. You have ex presidents insulting him now.

I am thoroughly lacking in surprise at how dumb Musk is.
