Yeah I reckon Unreal was very very close to being regarded as a classic (by which I mean held in the same breath as Quake, HL etc by the mainstream media), if not for a couple of minor things:
-Performance and compatibility was a bit flaky on initial release (I couldn't play it for about 6 weeks after buying it because unpatched it wouldn't work with a Cyrix CPU!)
-It came out a weird time of year (when I was doing A-level exams so was around May/June time) so had to compete with summer and the World Cup
-Halflife came out a bit later in the year and stole a lot of its thunder
-Weapons were a bit quirky at a time when people had been indoctrinated into the world of Doom/Quake [note I'm not saying the guns are bad far from it, but a lot of reviews seemed to find them a bit lacklustre]
