The Orville : New Horizons

Watched the first episode today and enjoyed it.

One thing that was distracting though was the picture quality. It was utterly superb, incredibly sharp and the characters really popped out from the background, it was almost 3D without being 3D.

I’ve never seen anything like it and I’m guessing that most of it was filmed on green screen.

I think what is actually is is that they co with the brighter outlook overall, IE Next Generation everywhere was well lit on the ship. THey arnt doing he over done massive contrast lighting over saturated neons all over the place in their filming.

Thought it was great. VFX team have stepped up an already pretty good game. The cast all did a fantastic job. Looking forward to seeing where it goes from here.

I thought it was great! Really like classic next-gen Star Trek, covering moral issues but not moralizing, and allowing both sides of the argument to be discussed, and not having any definite answers.

Nice to see they've got a new bridge and engine room. The engine room in particular in the previous two seasons looked incredibly cheap.
Though the glowing ball in the engine room (drive plasma?) did remind me of the Beryllium sphere from Galaxy Quest. :D

I noticed there was very little humour in this episode. I know they've been trying to find the right balance. The first season in particular had some awkward shoe-horning in of jokes, but in the second season there were a couple of moments that really landed for me and made me laugh without taking anything away from the drama.

Good start, new helmsman is fit :)

There was a point in the episode where I thought it was going to go one way, but then it was all forgotten about.

Malloy landed the new ship and spoke to fit helmsman (fh) about isaac, they both said they want rid of him, but nobody could do anything about it. Malloy then said Isaac had to check over the new ship diagnostics and fh said how could she trust him to do that?

Next scenes, Malloy is fighting 4 drones - I was expecting something to go wrong with this test or Malloy gets injured everyone blames isaac. Isaac saves Malloy with 'tech' and fh fesses up it was her and now Malloy gets injured, she realises isaac can be trusted.

Would have been a cliche, but it was setting up for that and then nothing, the whole conversation was forgotten about.

According to Seth McFarlane, each episode of this season is like a mini movie, and looking at this one I can believe it.
There is a chance of a 4th season, but it depends on how successful this one is (as always). The cast and crew are up for another season if it gets renewed.

I'm glad it's on Disney+ in the UK, as that's a successful streaming service with a lot of viewers, and it's being promoted pretty well. In the US and Canada it's on Hulu, and I don't think that's as popular as other streaming services.

I recommend you check out the channel Talking The Orville on Youtube, as the streamer seems to have an 'in' with the show creators (maybe it's sponsored) and has some great interviews and on-set footage. The set is absolutely huge, and a lot of it is contiguous.

One thing about the first ep, they did a star trek picard and did copy and paste of the same ship to fill the screens with a fleet of their ships. I noticed a bigger version of the orville but thats about it i think, same design basically just bigger. Would have been nice to see some diff designs or maybe a upgrade to the orville that made it look different.

There are two or three other types of Union ships, but they are all very similar.

There's the Orville with its three engine arcs, then there's a smaller ship that's only got two. Then there's the big cruiser, which is about double the Orville"s size and has a chunkier main hull.
In addition, for the new season they've added a new shuttle that looks a bit like a Battlestar Galactica Raptor, and of course the Pteridon fighter - which we also caught a glimpse of in the season 2 Kaylon battle.

And the thing is, fleets like this make sense. Of course you're going to make your fleet out of common components and have everything look like it was made at the same yards by the same people - that's how you'd do it in real life, for ease/cost of assembly and for operability.

It's one of the reasons why I like the fleets in the Star Fleet Universe (tabletop games) so much. A Federation frigate very obviously belongs to the same fleet as the Fed destroyer, or heavy cruiser, or dreadnought.

Agreed! The Moclan and Krill ships also have their own design aesthetic, and it's really important to be able to tell the difference between the enemy ships, and that aesthetic also applies to the shuttles.

I suppose the real issue though is that in the big battles there's not much of anything to distinguish the Orville from the other Union fleet ships.

Still it makes a lot of sense from the 'in universe' point of view.

E01S03 was pretty poor, these shows normally have a main story and a side story.... but it seems like they forgot the main story in this episode...

It felt too long, they were just padding it out as much as possible, especially the introduction of that new shuttle which seemed to go on forever...
