The Orville : New Horizons

Great episode!

Scenery was stunning again, although looked very budget when it was just the sand planet - don't know why they skimped on those parts.

Mercer is a bit of a thick Captain. I had a suspicion when Mallory 'froze' something was done when they thought they were at the point of death, confirmed when the same happened to Mercer - but he still had to put the crew through it a few more times before he knew what was going on!

I thought the ending being would have been testing humans and may have become an ally against the Krill - looks like they are the Orville's version of the Q.

Exactly my thoughts, though you mean Kaylon rather than Krill?

I also thought the exposition by the Q-like being at the end was a little too much. Really could have done with a John Delancie more sarcastic character to make it a bit more entertaining. Instead she just came off as smug.

Still a good episode, with some good performances and scenes, but the ending again fell a little flat.

They haven’t learned a thing about visiting alien worlds and exposing themselves to potential pathogens. It’s gone full trek rather than being the comedic parody but I really don’t mind.

Or sending the irreplacable high ranking bridge officers down to investigate instead of lower ranked mission specialists. To be fair this is a Star Trek trope, and even when they tried to stop doing this in STNG in the first season (as they realised it was a bit stupid) they found that narratively it didn't work that well, so had to let Picard off the ship occasionally!

I thought the same, also when watching Strange New Worlds - they send the Captain and the first officer every time as well as other key bridge personnel. It must be crap being other crew, live and work on the ship, yet the only people who's days are different, get to adventure off the ship and to get jiggy with alien species are the Management.

Looking back all ST shows do the same - would not happen in real life, but thinking about it, the show would be quite boring if the Captain stayed on the Bridge the entire time.

One other issue: Why didn't they use those little portable healing devices on Gordon or Mercer?
You know the ones like Kelly used to heal that little girl on the multi-phasic world in a previous episode which actually was the ultimate cause of this current episode.
Ok maybe it couldn't help with serious injuries, but it definitely can handle facial injuries.

Watched the 3 new episodes over the weekend and enjoyed them. They are not without their flaws but the crew are interesting, the visuals are mostly great and stories pretty engaging.

I was confused by the one episode tho..

The episode where the Admiral gets infected, why would the ships power being off cause their weapons not to work? Also they make references to life support being on minimal when they get the power back, surely this has to be at a minimum, minimal level at all times or they would all die pretty quickly.

I do try to not ask questions like this but its pretty sloppy writing.

There was a dampening field in effect, which stopped all electronic / phase type devices

Well the latest Episode "Gently Falling Rain" was absolutely flippin' amazing!

I thought initially they were going to be a bit unsubtle with the election references which seemed to parallel the debate about recent US elections, but it actually took some surprising twists and didn't end up with any overt messaging at all.

There was a welcome return to some humour which made me laugh out loud, but it didn't detract from any of the drama.

Some great action sequences and performances, and the plot was a nice continuation of previous Krill episodes and gave us a lot more information about their culture.

A solid 10 from me!

Well that escalated quickly!

What a fantastic episode - beat this week's SNW by a mile
Absolutely. First twenty minutes sat there thinking, oh no another "Day In The Life" filler. How wrong I was. Gripping stuff and quite dark. We couldn't bring ourselves to watch SNW afterwards, needed time to sink in.

This season really is first class, just hope it gets a Blu-ray release later in the year.

I literally just watched this episode, talk about timing after the whole roe vs wade thing and the anti abortion message in the show.
