The Penguin

I thought it was good, not great, not one to watch again really but it is good for sure. Going to go against the grain here but wasn't convinced by Colin's acting in this, I thought it was good but also overly awkward, although perhaps that's what he was going for? I dunno. I thought Sofia was the stand out, really well acted with some tough scenes at that.

It was a great ending, but it had a few weird miss-steps, such as:

Oz freeing himself from the chair and managing to escape.

Sofia's relationship with the doctor. Where did he go in this episode after the chair scene? Then he was suddenly her doctor again at Arkham Asylum.

But an excellent series on the whole and I hope we might get more TV series in this version of Gotham, even if Penguin isn't front and centre. Matt Reeves has sort of hinted at this and I presume this series has done very well in the ratings? I know the reviews were very positive.
No doubt they'll try too hard in the second series. I'd rather rather left it and tried to do that same type of show for a different character and different cast.

It is certainly one of the better series to watch this year.

But how Oz escaped Sophia's goons was just plain silly. Then, the whole politician subplot that was shoe-horned into the last episode meant it was obvious he was not going to kill Sophia. She stole every scene she was in so I am glad she is still around. And I felt the Victor murder was too telegraphed, kinda guessed it and it lost impact for me. Yeah, the finale didn't do it for me, but looking forward to seeing Oz in Batman II. Oh and Zoe Kravitz in a catsuit again

I think they did it to show that she was still a noob and also still underestimated him, I do agree it was too easy to go from strapped down to pwning everyone

I didn't predict him killing Victor but it did make sense in retrospect

I really liked the Sofia backstory (and loved the actress), which made her a much more understandable / sympathetic character in the second half of the season. But it lost it's way a bit in the last couple of episodes I thought. Had a strong start, but didn't quite hold it. I'd watch S2 if there is one.

Couple of interesting titbits/theories about whats next/the batman 2: Spoiled just in case

Joker is looking like it could be the next one in line to get The Penguin treatment
Batman 2 potential villain is Scarecrow, played by Rush, from he Penguin as in ep4 there's a Scarecrow glove and mask in the background - but apparently Julian Rush is also an alias of Hugo Strange in the gotham tv show.
Farrell is only expected to be Batman 2 briefly, couple of scenes are mentioned.

Finally got round to watching this......If we hadn't have known before hand there is no way either of us would have realised it was Colin Farrell in the role of the main character...!
We both very much enjoyed the series, grimy, gritty and it added so much to the background of the penguin.
His relationship with his mother and his brothers........

"What he did as a young child to cause the deaths of his brothers.....oh my. But the ending with the killing of Victor, that one somewhat surprised us both. The dispassionate brutality of it......and his mum always knowing, oh my."
We did like the nod to the original Penguin, the colour purple and top hat and suit towards the end.

Hopefully this could continue........

This is how I remember The Penguin...

The series wasn't a masterpiece, it was more that it just didn't get anything wrong.....which is a rare thing.

The opening two episodes made me feel this was going to be something more special than it actually was. But it is easily one of the best shows of the year because as I say it felt well cast, well written, looked good and the world building was bold but believable.

The second to last scene was important, I thought it was great that the viewer kind of got conned by Oz too.
