****The Playstation 3 Slim Thread****

Yes you can -

You prise off a little flap on the bottom to reveal a screw which when removed allows the front right part to slide off...

Ahh great news then, excellent.

Anyone know when we will be able to pre order the ps3 slim then, or does the early september release date not include the UK ?

Sorry a bit late to the party.
Ive been seeing the fact that theres no linux compatability on the ps3 slim.
Wheres that news come from???

Yeah, that's true. No idea why it's cut out, but you can't install Linux on the slim.

So what about a prediction regarding the noise level ?

The fan at full speed will be quieter than the fan at low speed on the current version, or am I too optimistic ?

There's no way to tell for sure until it comes out. It's almost certainly going to be quieter than the current PS3's, I'm sure they'll have optimized the design a bit more, and used a less noisy fan. It all depends just how much heat the slim puts out, but I don't think the full speed will be quieter than the low speed on the current one. I'd like to be wrong though :)

Indeed, let's hope you are wrong. :D

Hmm, I noticed someone mentioning about the PS3 Phat... so they are completely stopping production of those and the PS3 Slim will be the only one will be produced?

I've yet to see any appealing Phat versions to make me consider buying one over a Slim even at a knocked down price. There's one place that's got them for £250 + 2 games, but 2 games versus 40GB more hard drive space and a new design with less heat/power consumption and noise? ...

Not a fan of its look to be honest, looks a bit cheap and nasty. That said the lower heat production and power consumption is certainly welcome. If my old phat ever blows up I'll be switching over; if not I really don't see anything to make me want to.

That explains why it's only smaller in one dimension.

It's not though it's smaller in width and height, the 60GB PlayStation 3 console is approximately 325 mm (W) × 98 mm (H) × 274 (L) mm and the slim is Approx. 290 × 65 × 290 mm. So the fat is 35mm wider 33mm higher, but the slim is 16mm longer.
