****The Playstation 3 Slim Thread****

The current PS3 doesn't have a fan pointing outwards, perhaps you should check how the PS3 is engineered first.

End of the day we are both speculating, we'll have to wait and see.

There is no need to go sarcy on me lad.

I just assumed the vents at the back and given the huge size of the PS3 that there were fans at the back.

Tbh i dunno why you think this is real. I would have assumed you would have known better that something that thin and something as powerful as the PS3 would be near impossible to keep cool given the current technology. The PS3 is difficult enough to keep cool as it is at the minute.

And i agree with a lot of the above posts. Its not the finished product (if real), as you can clearly see in the first picture that itis only the top shell.

But we've already suggested that the Cell is reduced to 45nm with less heat, the power supply will be moved to an external brick, etc. Even now, the fan on my PS3 rarely gets going enough to be audible.

Surely though thats a backward step for Sony? Having a "power brick" is one of the reasons why quite a few people don't like the 360 and like PS3. I think Sony have done a very good job of packing everything into the current PS3, and im all for slimming it down if possible, but those pictures are nothing to go by, which im quite surprised by the OP because he trying to turn pictures of something that resembles a PS3 into real evidence.

If its real then great! Ill gladly put my hands up and say i was wrong. But i don't like the way the OP has tried to make this out to be the real thing by giving "evidence" pictures. Seems more like a Magick style post to me.

Current 80GBs dont use a single fan like the old 60GBs did, they have a twin fan for the CPU/GPU (pretty sure ive seen one taken apart).

Current PS3's only use one fan.

Here is the underside of the heatsink,

Thing is though, won't compacting everything make the unit more expensive? Or am i missing something?

I'd love to strap one of those heatsinks into my PC :E

No, mainly becuase they will have up to 50 per cent better yield per wafer on the 45nm process over the current 65nm process which will save them a lot of money.

Pretty impressive cooling on the PS3 actually. Never seen the insides before. Strange that its so big atm though. Is it the blu-ray drive making it big?

If you mean the whole unit keep in mind inside there is:

a (full sized ie. non laptop) bluray drive
a laptop harddrive
a PSU
a motherboard
a wireless card of some sort
that massive heatsink + fan

When you keep that in mind it is a surprisingly compact unit.

True. I thought the majority was cooling! But yea thinking about it now, its pretty impressive.

I said "Possible supporting evidence", trust me, I'm not quite at Magicks level yet :p, I'm not saying that it is 100% real, I just think it could be, and even if it is not I do beleive that is is possible to downscale the PS3 into a smaller chassis, maybe with an external PSU like the first (and very popular) slimline PS2's, but certainly not as small as that.

hmm, If its that thin, there doesnt seem to be any way to put it on its side.

To be honest, I'd rather see something around the size of the Wii, Even if it's fatter to allow for cooling

even the ps2 hasn't got that small. there's no way to get the motherboard etc down to that size including the bluray drive.

Wii can onyl be that small cause it's got about as much power as a small rodent.

Looks fake to me, though a smaller model could well be on the horizon with the new process coming in. Could be just the thing to rejuvinate the PS3 sales, worked with the PS2.
