****The Playstation 3 Slim Thread****

Looks like just the lid to me.
It is. It's clearly being held by a white gloved technician and you can see straight through the optical disc slot to the pink cloth behind. :)

Indeed, you can also see the screw standoffs for where it slots to the base section of the unit. It will be slimmer but not 'that' slim. :D

I think this is the problem, people are just looking at the top part and thinking that is how thick the unit is going to be, it's missing the underside that is in 5th picture, if you envision those two pieces fitted together it's not that thin tbh.

Yeah - TBH i'm most interested in the 45nm power saving. If (as suggested) it's 40% lower than the current 110w rating of the 80gb board then that's quite a drop!

Why get so excited about that, my 2 year old, 180W using 60GB model is already quiet enough for comfort.

And at three hours a day usage the power difference is less than a quid a month.

Only the cell processor will be much lower in consumption, the majority of components will have similar power requirements to the full fat PS3.

PS2 is thinner and is able to be stand up vertically,

Although you need stand.

Therefore standing it up defeats the point of having a slim because then the stand is just as wide as a regular if not wider. :P

I completely understand - it's just from an 'every little helps' point of view it's a good thing. Much in the same way my low power HTPC only uses 60w rather than a normal PC's 150-180w.

Well for me it's about the aesthetics that may come with a having a 45nm cell processor due to being able to potentially downscale the chassis, and also the price drop that may come with that, the PS3 certainly needs a drop in price and tbh it needs a larger user-base that may come with the price drop.

I can't see the PS3 going smaller then the 360 theres just to much stuff in it and not forgetting the psu they could make that external to reduce size but I can't see them going down that road.

I too would be a little surprised if they did use an external PSU - but it's not impossible to imagine... they have done it before with the PS2 remember.

It would mean that it can be physically smaller and it saves a lot of heat inside the enclosure.

It would but then it would also have the additional power brick in tow too.

When compared to the 360 i find the PS3 a lot nicer to move/transport due to it being all one item.

Quite honestly it won't effect me unless my beloved 40gb dies. :D

There probably will be one but it wont be that, it looks like a £10 toy. Maybe its just the design prototype.

Edit: Silly me, I just glanced and though that was the entire unit. It's just the 'lid' part of the case.

I can't even fit ps3 in my bag 360 with power brick fits no problem.

It looks crap, far to small and slim, you want something with a bit of beef to it, plus how about making it cheaper first rather than bringing out a new model.

If you had consulted the thread you'd realise that 45nm will mean it's cheaper and if it was beef it wouldn't be a slim.
