Can someone clarify what will happen if I try to backup protected game saves? Will the backup fail? Or will it be the restore that will fail? Do you have to remove the files before you try to backup?

Backups up fine - will see how the restore works tomorrow. Backup must work for protected files as it's bit more obvious what you are trying to do rather than appearing to just copy the save to 'cheat'

Rang a retail shop in Birmingham and they will do £199 for a 60Gb as well so will go and trade tomorrow. The benefits just seem to outweight having a 60Gb tbh.

Just to add a touch of mystery, fear, paranoia and dispare to this lovely thread.

The PS3 slims are new, what if they're faulty, what if they die, what if you're trading in your working consoles for a heathen console that is set to explode.

I did some reading and, I think, when you restore it just won't restore the protected files/saves, dunno if you will see an error or just have a few missing game saves.

Putting my 60GB back to how it was in preparation for tomorrow, 99% certain I am gonna do it now

when logged into psn, go to account management -> system activation -> ps3 system and you can de-activate from there

Silly question - when you move your previous HDD to your new PS3 it will 100% have to wipe it right?

Just thought Id wipe this HDD now and do some checks on it to make sure its 100% before sticking it in tomorrow - also tempted to upgrade to a 500Gb one . Need to see of a WD 5400 one fits into the PS3 though...

yeh, you'll need to use third party software to format the drive to fat32 as windows doesn't let you..

yeh, i'm pretty sure it re-formats every time a new hd is detected, regardless if it has just been formatted?

i backed mines up to a memory stick and it never wiped anything off the stick
i think it created a folder and stuck the backup in there

Yes. And the backup disk does not have to be blank, just FAT32 with enough space on it.

with my staff discount i'll be getting one for a lovely £225, with no games though, just the geotech pack (hdmi lead, headset, usb hub and addon triggers)

Can't wait to finally watch my blu rays properly (sure my laptop wasn't cutting it)
