****The Playstation 3 Slim Thread****

Replied to you on avforums.

Great update for the PS3 that makes it a much more viable blu ray player for us film buffs.

- Quieter
- 35% less power consumption
- Bitstream: OMG HOW IMPORTANT IS THAT LIGHT ON AN AMP ;)
- Ermmmmmm..... Bah, those points above will do.

:D

Well, im going to need to test bitstream thoroughly, of course (lol) but im not expecting anything. but yes, noise (especially upscaling a dvd which was harder on my 60gb than bluray was), power reduction (50% less than my 60gb!) and a new warranty are enough for me.

The only problem i have now, is that it looks too small for my unit :p think ill put it on top of my xbox it'll be fine there :)

oooh there's talk on avforums that onkyo amps can control the ps3 thru bravia link....i need to try this lol

it works with veira link! my panasonic remote controls my ps3 :D

edit: and my onkyo

Hmmm, I am going to try on my Panasonic. What model do you have? I have a Panasonic TX-32LXD70 (32 inch LCD).

Edit: It works!! Just turned on the function on PS3 and now the Viera Link works!!! I cannot see myself using it much (if at all), but it is a free feature, so cannot grumble.
Edit2: Wonder if I can remote control Blu-Rays?
Edit3: You can move around XMB and use iPlayer etc using just the directional buttons and "OK" on the remote. For Blu-ray the direction al buttons do not work, nor does the ffw/rwd, at the bottom of the remote. However, Pressing "Option" gives same actions as Triangle, "Return" is Circle and "OK" is X. Not figured out what Square is. using these you can navigate a Blu-ray. and also the Green button adds bookmarks.

might have to get one of these at the weekend

was originally going to just get a 360 arcade for the money saving. however i wasthinking that they where still cheap.... didnt realise theres been the silly price bump so by the time i buy the console and wireless adapter then im not all that far off the price a certain supermarket is selling ps3's for :/

decisions decisions

Surely you'd need a hard drive to go with the arcade too?

Can't understand Microsoft's thinking with the XBox

The Arcade was readily available for under £100. At this price it made sense if you could get hold of a cheap hard drive

At £150 it makes no sense at all. They've also discontinued the Pro so you're basically forced to go for the Elite at £199

I was thinking of getting an Arcade for £99 then getting a cheap hard drive but at £150 I've decided against it.

If you do a little background, the price increase was not entirely Microsoft's doing.

I admit I haven't done any background reading - I just saw that they'd reduced the price of the Elite but discontinued the Pro and increased the price of the Core. I thought that they were just trying to persuade people to pay more money for the Elite :o

I know I take the mick out the bitstream and how all the users go on about its superiority with entry level setups, but I'm going to be comparing both once I get a HD processor to see if there is any difference after all. In the processor section over at avforums, some of the more established and bonkers members swear to hear a difference, but need to hear it for myself.

Will try it with my Kuro remote, but to be honest I'm not hopeful. maybe I'l finally get round to programing my Harmony One. It's been a lovely paperweight the last year

Do you think that once (yes, once not if) the PS3 overtakes the Xbox 360 in units sold, Valve will change their stance on PS3 development? I'd like to see them go back when HL2: Episode 3 comes out and re-release a new, properly ported version of "Half Life 2 - The Complete Collection".

Probably not, it's not the matter of how popular it is, is more the matter that they are completely lazy when it comes to developing for the PS3 as it takes more work than the 360 due to how easy it is for them to port PC -> 360, and that they apparantly have no skilled PS3 developers.

Valve are a surprisingly small development studio, especially in comparison to the man power companies like EA and Ubisoft have at their disposal. The PS3 requires a completely different way of thinking and programming and i don't think it's viable for Valve to either train its already limited staff or hire new staff just for one console, especially when they are a PC developer first and foremost.
