The Polaris RX 480 Owners Thread.

Cheers, only just sorted my cpu temps out.

Might add a side fan to blow in some cool air over the card.

Just remember, 90c or below is perfectly safe. You would be surprised at the temperatures GPUs can take before damage occurs.

I would recommend checking out this video for some GPU tuning tips in Wattman.

My current target GPU temperature is 85c, with a bit of undervolting and the fan is silent.

Matt do you have an idea of which vendors are bringing customs 480s? Or is this something your not allowed to talk about? I don't recall seeing this being an NDA topic?

We know Asus have the Strix coming
MSI have a Gaming
Sapphire have Nitro and Toxic
Powercolor have a Devil card
Gigabyte??
Xfx??
Others?

I'm not privvy to this information Si but i think you can expect the regulars, some of which you have already listed.

I can see me buying a 3rd party cooler for this card.

Seems to be a lot fewer options for coolers than there used to be.

Ok, there's now the AIO WC loop bandwagon on the go but you still need a fan for the rest of the card unless you go into the world of a block for the whole card which AIO doesn't do.

Arctic Cooling still do their Accelero range, had one on my previous card with fans permanently on 7v, took up 3 slots and was wider than the card but did the job.

But aside from them I'm not seeing much.

I still can't fathom why AMD went for a single 6-pin connector on this card. I can't see it costing any more to simply put an 8-pin there instead, except that way we get an extra 75W headroom.

Honestly, it's like they're intentionally gimping overclocking, but I really don't want to believe that they would do such a thing.

I think they did it because they were desperately pushing the efficiency angle. It would look pretty terrible to release a product right now that has between 390 and 390x performance but still needs a decent bit more than 150w when Nvidia just released the 150w 1070.

Well I get that but the card won't draw more power simply because the connector is there - it can still be marketed as an x wattage card, except that it will overclock and we won't get dozens of "OMG PCI EXPRESS POWER DRAW" threads. :p

@Tute: it's been mentioned many times that 6-pin isn't limited to 75W power draw and can easily take 150W if needed. Also, there are three 12V pins active on that 6-pin connector as opposed to just two 12V pins as standard. That way AMD virtually turned their 6-pin connector into a 8-pin one already so I wouldn't expect much more OC potential coming through a properly implemented 8-pin on non-reference cards.

yup it is already a 8 pin in disguise from what i have read.

the issue is it is drawing 50/50 between the plug and the pcie socket and exceeding pcie specs in doing so at sustained loads, not spikes.

looks like their fix tomorrow will just tell the gpu to draw more from the 6 pin and less on the pcie connector.

thats what i have gathered from my very limited understanding and im drunk :P

roll on the new driver, then i and many others can enjoy our new cards :)

just had a wee tinker in watt man for the fan speeds, finished playing dark souls 2 scholar on my tv so i switched my tv to extended mode and put monitor back as primary and im drunk :)

had gpu-z and cpuz also core temp running on my tv while playing the witcher 3 on my monitor.

the 480 was sticking to 59% fan speed and the temp was a constant 89c, so i messed about with the fan profiles a bit on watt man and i got the temp down about 20c :)

if the fan goes above 79-80% it sounds like my old 4850 reference, eg a jet taking off lol

a few percent below that and it is quiet just a humm im using a fractal design r4 case though :)

edit : fresh boot up and temp is 35c idle fan speed 70% 2987 rpm

drunken edit : amd matt can you tell the amd driver crew that the new hdmi scaling in crimson causes massive input lag while the catalyst one didnt when putting a card to a tv :)

Apart from Sapphire, maybe the other AIB's should at least show some of the cards ETA's even if they release 3-4 weeks later. The 1060 already has Gigabyte showing off their G1 model . AMD partners need to get a move on. Potential buyers will not wait forever.

3 reasons,
aib can sell a more power oriented card.
dont interfer with aib cards and seperate them.
power efficiency but since the power saving features isnt activated that one is a mystery atm.
Price point.
