Got my first SLR yesterday, wanted to try out night pictures and came across this little fellow in my garden. Just pointing and shooting, haven't learnt it all yet.

Two macros and a pair of flowers from earlier. Was playing about with lighting with my flash indoor. I've not got a diffuser but I kinda like the harsh lighting personally :)

The greenfly was about 2mm long, amazed at how much detail you can get with some macrorings and the 18-55 kitlens :D

I like them :). Saw one in my garden a few days back but by the time i had got my camera it had scurried away.

Just started taking pics of bugs but I'm finding it hard to get close to them. I'm using a Nikon 60mm macro and you have to be quite close to the subject. I think I'll try and find a ladybird as they're a bit more friendly :p.

Heres just a quick one i took of a fly on my kitchen window. It seems really grainy and its only at ISO200, is this normal with a D80? I always try to keep it at 100 but sometimes i need to turn it up a bit, i thought a DSLR should be pretty grain free up to ISO800?

Also i think i need to higher the aperture a bit so i don't have such a shallow depth of field. I think I'll have to have the flash on so that i can do this, will a normal pop up flash work?

What sort of macroring(s) are we talking about there?
Bought a set of 3 extension rings, used all 3 rings - so 64mm of extension rings.
Shot would have been at 55mm with the minimum focal distance possible to get nice and close and try and fill up the frame - was probably around 1cm from the fly. The image is cropped to about 1/9 of the original image (1/3 horizontal, 1/3 vertical)
Hope that helps :)

1cm away? Wow! Slight wobble and squished fly on your lens! With the three rings on, what sort of effect did your zoom have?

Only 30-55mm is useable, below that won't focus on anything. As I go towards 35mm I can get closer - but the smaller zoom means things don't get any bigger - not point using it.

 greywolf in non danbo posting shock!

not too sure about the second one brendy, dare i suggest the colours are too strong?

A couple of macros from tonight.

Still not happy with my bee shots though as the little buggers are just too quick

I still think drugging them is the right action to get some decent shots :p

Second is lovely... First looks like a photoshop exercise?
First one was changed to b&w and her eyes were nudged up a touch on saturation, other than that, untouched.
Derek, The second pic was again, slightly bumped up on saturation as it is a stitch of a couple of pics and although was a very sunny day, some of the colours appeared a little washed out.
