Heres my FIRST EVER trial at a night shot, also first timme with a tripod!

comments welcome :)

First up, straighten the horizon and it appears that there isn't really anything in focus?

Just checked the exif and you're at f4.8. crank that up to f16 or so. You've got a tripod so don't worry about having the shutter open for a long time (providing its not howling a gale). This will increase your depth of field meaning more areas will be in focus. Give that a blast and see what happens ;)

EDIT

Possible invest in a cokin filter system and get a graduated filter as well so you can have a better exposed sky / ground rather than having one exposed the other over / under exposed

Thanks Derek :)

f/11 is fine. Actually f/11 would provide a sharper result than f/16, but if you take a landscape where the foreground is very close to the lens (with a wide angle perhaps say 30-50cm) or use a lens longer than 28mm f/16 would be good if the foreground is closer than 75cm. Other wise f/11 and the hyperfocal distance will be fine.

I know a few of you are bored of Danbo, so heres another...

Can anyone tell me why the colours and sharpness get messed up when I upload my photo to Flickr and Photobucket?

Looks totally different in windows picture viewer and CS3 and lightroom than it does when uploaded. Ive noticed it before but this picture made it more apparent.

Open the jpg file with your internet browser (right-click> open with).

If the colours are still messed up then it's something wrong with the colour profiles in your browser. If colours are perfect, then it's flikr's fault.

I'm sure flikr applies sharpening and resamples your photos, but not sure if it does anything to colour.

Also, you should be using sRGB for web use.

Thanks mate, it was IE causing the problem. Just installed Firefox and it looks fine on Flickr. I think I'll take this opportunity to switch to firefox .

Took a few down the river in Guildford yesterday. first time I've taken this camera out (30d), this lens out (nifty), and funny enough even though I've lived here a couple of years it's the first time I've seen a few of these things...

More on flickr http://www.flickr.com/photos/64236802@N00/sets/72157623880352366/ (also the first time I've used flickr...)

edit: and the first time I've used lightroom - really impressed :). Like the dual monitor support
