This is why some people shoot with primes over zooms and also prefer FF camera's.
Don't test AF with dog's as their snout can play havok with your AF. If the dog is looking strait at you, aim the focus point on/just above the forehead. If the dog is looking to the side, go ahead and place your AF point over it's eye.

That's why you have those really dark shadows while still risking blown highlights.

I don't see why thats bad?... it's real life. I thought the whole purpose of photography was to capture real life moments. Not live in an imaginary perfect world trying to obtain an Oscar. Though the wheelie bin ruins it.

Camera sensors don't capture what we see so it's representation isn't accurate to real life, it's more accurate and pleasing to the eye at different times of the day. You're right that capturing real life moments doesn't change at any time, you just have to learn to work with what you've got and if you can, turn it in to an advantage.
