As for the star trails, I think you did more than try :) Those are definitely star trails hehe. I guess the knack is trying to find interesting items to put in the foreground otherwise trails all look the same after a while.

I looked at going to London Zoo (after getting excited when a squirrel let me take photos of it) but even as a student it's so expensive!

I think 17mm isn't wide enough for places like this to get it all in with perspective in one shot, thinking of possibly selling the 17-40 and getting something wider, anyone have a few to recommend for full frame usage?

Keep reading and seeing amazing things about the 14L II - but I've never used one AND its pricey.... (very pricey)!

If you go for that it has the added benefit of helping you complete Ray's sub 200mm L collection.

Well, if 17mm isn't wide enough then 16mm isn't going to be a worthwhile upgrade as the most significant part would be the extra stop more than the 1mm.

This leave you with the 14mm, which is about £1,500? I think.

Unless you go fisheye or other 3rd party lenses, which I am not familiar about.

These days I think Ken Rockwell is a bit of an old fuddy duddy and spews out a lot of garbage on his site when it comes to advice on what to buy. However his review of the 14L II really does paint a good picture of it, he clearly uses it a lot and has plenty of photos that show it off. ******* have it for around £1230 if paying BT.

Plan B....I hear grumblings that the Nikon 14-24 is sharper than primes in this range - and I've seen youre not scared of a bit of DIY sometimes mrk so why not make it happen LOL

Interesting, do you have any high res images shot with it similar to my CDC one or Train Station above?

Obviously the Nikon 14-24 is pretty spectacular and can be used on a canon body with an adaptor, however I think I remember hearing Canon was working on a competing lens, no might be worth waiting a while if 17mm isn't causing too many problems.
Also have you considered a 24mm tilt shift, and just stitch 2 shifted frames together?

Hmm I haven't considered stitching 2 or even 3 together, in fact I might try that with the 17-40 next time although stitching is a problem where moving objects are concerned in a busy image, makes post processing a bit trickier.
