The RAC have lost my car.

The wife's car broke down at my dad's place in Devon, weekend before last. RAC came out and arranged for the car to be relayed to my home address. They took it away on Saturday the 8th April. I've heard nothing since.

Stuff I've done:

Called them on the 11th to be told to email logistics, which I did.
Called them in the 13th as I had no reply from logistics. Told to email logistics again which I did.
Called yesterday to be told that the only thing they can do is email logistics for me.
Called today to be told that there is no proceedure for escalation, I cannot speak to logistics, I cannot speak to a manager, I cannot speak to customer services. The only thing they can do for me is to email a manager and logistics and see what happens. I asked them "What am I supposed to do?", only to be told that all I can do is wait and hope that the car is eventually found and delivered.

I have no faith that I'm ever getting my car back. I think they have lost it.
I can't really report it stolen either as the police will say that I handed it over willingly and that it's a civil matter.

No idea what to do to be honest.

Yes, but I'd rather have the car back than the £2k ish it's worth as an insurance payout.

Guess what RAC eventually came back with on Twitter:

“You car will be returned 3 to 5 days after it’s collected”.

I have replied that it’s been 10 days already. Ffs. Couldn’t make it up.

I feel a call to Clive Bull on LBC’s consumer hour tomorrow evening might be appropriate.

Still nothing from them this morning. Time to call my insurance and see if my legal cover can help.

Police won't do anything. It's a civil matter. I'm not going to bother them with it unless it's a last resort. Police have better things to do.

I just called them again just now. Told them that unless this is sorted today I will be going to the press, BBC Watchdog, Rip off Britain, LBC, and anyone else I feel like talking to. Also pointed out that I'm a blue badge holder and that it doesn't look good depriving a disabled individual of their transport.
I was assured of a call back within 2 hours. I won't hold my breath.

I've reported it stolen with Devon and Cornwall police and started a claim with Direct Line.

Have you said the RAC have stolen it?

Yes, I did. I have a crime reference number which is all I need.

Excellent. Direct Line are delivering a hire car to me tomorrow.

I'm thinking that RAC stands for Really Awful Company. Or maybe, Rogues Abduct Cars.

Nope. Direct Line called me earlier to say that they have approved my insurance claim for theft.

I'd rather have the car back to be honest. It's worth more to me than its monetary value. Yes, it's a 15-year-old CR-V but I've had it 10 years but it's FSH and we have always proactively replaced parts. The engine is sweet, it just needs a new clutch master cylinder (which is what caused the breakdown).

Yup. I may investigate taking RAC to court over this if I end up too far out of pocket.
