The Radeon RX 6900/6950 XT Owners Thread.

This is pretty cool but also a little worry inducing

I'm sure I heard/read somewhere before that AMD and Nvidia set the specification that partner cards must not exceed in order to be licensed.
Is this why partners never push an extra 25mv for higher boosts to compete with each other?
Would it be worth firing an email to sapphire tech support to ask if we could safely overvolt these cards another 50-100mv without causing long term damage or are they already pushed to their absolute brink?
There must be a factor or safety in their design for overclocking surely?
This is not safe or recommended it’s a tweak using an unsupported 3rd party tool, it’s completely at your own risk and I would not recommend it.

Having reached the oh stuff it stage of the game of price-drop-tv that is tracking GPU prices, I now have one of these:

And straight out of the box (well out of the box, into the PC, loop drain and rebuild, leak test etc., but radeon software all default), I got this:

Which was nice.

Nice. What is the maximum GPU frequency as listed in GPU Tuning menu of Radeon Software for the default clock speed?

King/victory.. yet settings have to be turned down/off again.... Oh dear @TNA  :D

Ps.

Not sure I would say more FPS is necessarily better in this title...

Ok, so a massive faff later and it’s in! Had to remove some stuff to make way for the rad and by golly was it a pain to add the extra fans to give push/pull.

However now it’s all in and tidy I’m pretty happy. It’s running nice and cool but I still need to set it up properly in MPT.

Welcome and on TROH.:)

To get on the Roll of Honour all you have to do is post a pic with your user name on it of your Radeon RX 6900 XT.

I don't have any problem disabling RT or other settings if I require more FPS in a game.

Yup if that's the case then fair. After all, we all reduce certain settings to maintain a certain FPS especially if on high refresh rate screens but to say victory etc. when settings have to be reduced in order to achieve so-called said victory is taking it a bit far.... :D

It's victory with RT off, which I clearly mentioned.

Most people using 6900 XTs like its superior raster performance vs Ampere.

If FSR is not available, I am sure most of the owners here do not bat an eye lid about turning RT off since it adds so little and costs so much in performance terms.

its true I would rather play the game than stare at a puddle admiring how pretty it looks with the reflections.

I fitted a Sapphire 6900 XT SE to my son's old Ivy Bridge the other day
he picked it up whilst waiting for 12900k to launch

anway i cant really tax it due to the Xeon E3 1290 V2 not having the clout to push the card at 1080p

I ended up using vsr and 4k to test gpu load temps

The stock bios seems to have a temp target of 80°C
i would rather that target be 70°C or there abouts
does the secondary bios have a faster fan profile or just slower boost clocks?

I dont get a chance to get on his pc to look much

Its not a problem atm as its running with the fans off in the low 50's due to the cpu
but when he gets the 12900k i want the temp target lower

My 3090 FE keeps to a 70°C target even with a 400w pl and + 920ram

Why would you rather the target temp is 70c? 80c is a very respectable temperature for a air cooled GPU.

Are you mearing the edge or junction temperature?

Second BIOS probably has a lower fan speed and power limit.

I would just use a custom fan profile if you want lower temperatures.

edge
80°C isnt respectable its awful
70°C is the max im willing to live with but prefer under 65°C
if my nuclear power plant 3090 FE at 400w TDP can make it 6900XT can

Lets look at my old cards

Sapphire R9 290 Trixx 65°C 1100mhz Core 5600mhz Ram
Sapphire Vega 64 Nitro+ 63°C 1695 Core 1045 Ram +50% PL (e.g much more power than the 6900XT)

We arnt talking about some coffin nzxt case here we are talking about a well cooled mesh case

I will use a fan profile if i have to ofc but the problem being
is if your pc as much as farts the radeon drivers reset your "OC" you cant just tell it to use it 100% of the time
and im not there to monitor all the time like i did with my Vega 64

Oh, there's a lot to unpack in your post.

The maximum temperature for edge is 100c, so 80c is far from awful and perfectly respectable for an air cooled graphics card.

Heat does not kill graphics cards, high voltage and power draw does. That's engineering 101.

You can't compare older graphics cards since they are using completely different process nodes so comparisons are useless.

If you overlock settings are resetting at boot, that typically means your settings are not stable or your system did not restart or shutdown cleanly. For example, if you click the restart button.

hey man stop trying to lecture me i have forgotten more that you know
as i said 80°C is bad
Its feels like you should be on reddit not a forum

i asked a simple question and dont need to be lectured on temps

The techpowerup bios screenshot is for the wrong card btw the Nitro+ SE has a 289W chip draw not 264W

"Heat does not kill graphics cards, high voltage and power draw does. That's engineering 101."
No way man, maybe thats why i want to keep it under 70°C, maybe as its going to live its life at 100% Load with an uncapped framerate?
e.g. Heat + High Voltage + Power Draw so bringing one of them metrics down makes a big difference to the expected lifespan

"You can't compare older graphics cards since they are using completely different process nodes so comparisons are useless."
Umm what thats the stupidest thing i have ever heard

"If you overlock settings are resetting at boot, that typically means your settings are not stable or your system did not restart or shutdown cleanly. For example, if you click the restart button."
Yes thats right, they also reset at random if the background process doesnt terminate quick enough on reboot once in a while

I wish you the best of luck.

I wish you the best of luck.

Hey man thanks that means a lot coming from someone as knowledgeable and well respected as you

I was clearly asking someone who owns the card what the second bios fan profile was
and not some jabber mouth with 36k posts who feels the need to answer every post with a "guess" and a hope:cry:
