The Radeon RX 6900/6950 XT Owners Thread.

I fitted a Sapphire 6900 XT SE to my son's old Ivy Bridge the other day
he picked it up whilst waiting for 12900k to launch

anway i cant really tax it due to the Xeon E3 1290 V2 not having the clout to push the card at 1080p

I ended up using vsr and 4k to test gpu load temps

The stock bios seems to have a temp target of 80°C
i would rather that target be 70°C or there abouts
does the secondary bios have a faster fan profile or just slower boost clocks?

I dont get a chance to get on his pc to look much

Its not a problem atm as its running with the fans off in the low 50's due to the cpu
but when he gets the 12900k i want the temp target lower

My 3090 FE keeps to a 70°C target even with a 400w pl and + 920ram

3090's have a temp target of 83c and the max is basically it shuts down at 90c from what I understand:-

GPU Device Id: 0x10DE 0x2204 Version: 94.02.27.00.0A PG136 SKU 10 VGA BIOS Copyright (C) 1996-2020 NVIDIA Corp.

GPU Board Connectors 1x HDMI 3x DisplayPort

Board power limit Target: 350.0 W Limit: 400.0 W Adj. Range: -71%, +14%

Thermal Limits Rated: 83.0C Max: 90.0C

Memory Support GDDR6X, Micron Boost Clock: 1695 MHz

7nm cards like the amd 6000 series and even their Ryzen cpus on 7nm run really hot unless tamed by a good cooler, the 3090FE cooler is basically overbuilt and can manage the heat better but as you know too the memory on the 3090 FE can run hot too up to 105c they say is safe but as we know that upset people because some cards would run a lot cooler than others due to the thermal pads.

Best way to keep the temps down on your 6900xt is maybe underclock it, reduce the power limit or set a fan profile (this I'm sure you know), check the card too and make sure there is good contact with the cooler, .

I have dual 3090s in SLI/NVLINK and in summer was fun trying to keep the top card under 80c when both were being used at once, bottom card was fine as it had a fan right under it to blow cool air at it top card hit 80c+ on really hot days and I stuck a fan inside the case to blow between the cards and that kept it in the 75c+ range. My case is not a great air flow case it's a silent designed case.. You can see the build here :- https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/posts/34846430/ and where I had to add the yellow fan with high static pressure to blow between the cards and a fan on the side panel too.

They are pain this gens cards as they use lots of power and produce a lot of heat sadly, next gen god help us with the planned power limits of 450w+.

Maybe try adding a fan in the case to help increase the air over the card or check the cooler is on right on it if other reviews say it doesn't get this hot, but remember they test on an open bench so add 5c-10c once in a case depending on your air flow.

Yes I'm teasing you before you get upset and lecture me on memes :p;)

Does the TriXX software not state any of that information when you flip between the two bios switches ?

You can get it from link below and check, seems to have a lot of features regarding their bios for these cards.

https://www.sapphiretech.com/en/software

Also GPU-Z under the advanced tab should also state what the bios is doing too, so worth taking a screenshot under each bios and compare the differences, remember you will need to flip the switch (while off) and restart the pc to read what the new switch says under the advanced tab.

Yeah that 83°C Target is at a high fan ramp and is for the whole board and not just the Core

The 3090 FE Fan Profile ramps the fan to try and maintain 70°C on the Core
The edge is usually 67°C - 70°C at 100% Load 400W PL

Im overly aware on the failings of the FE's Memory Cooling
and was one of the first to fix it in Feb 21 when we could read the Memory Temp

I dropped the Memory Temps from 104°C/106°C ingame

to 82°C with a Custom OC Curve +165 at the lower end of the curve +75 at the higher end +920 Ram 400W PL Fan Runs at 1150 RPM ish now and is only trying to keep the core under its 70°C target instead instead of like 2150 trying to keep the memory from melting into a pile of goo, its always sitting on its 400W PL always uncapped framerate with an i9-9900KS @ 5.2Ghz

Nvidia Pads untouched on the front
Thermalrigh Odyssey 12.8 W/mK PCB to Backplate
Thermalrigh Odyssey 12.8 W/mK Backplate to Heatsink
120x69x29 Heatsink Fitted to Backplate
Noctua NF-A8 PWM Controlled with a silent ramp from 0rpm depending on load

Both PC's are setup the same with plenty of Cooling and keep super low internal temps
infact my gpu temps dont even go down if i take the side off on my pc so they wont on my son's either i doubt

2 x 140MM in the front (in) pwm by load
2 x 140MM in the top (out) pwm by load
1 x 140MM in the back (out) pwm by load

Good luck keeping sli/crossfire cool i havnt run two cards since the Radeon HD 4870 since they cooked so bad
even though i kept two slots of space between them with good case cooling and the bottom card was a blower as well

If the secondary bios of the 6900 XT doesnt have a better fan ramp which tbh i doubt it does but was just asking an owner to save my son crying at me for kicking him off his pc for 30 mins whilst i mess around
i will set a custom curve for him with a 70°C Target
and hope it doesnt reset to often

im trying to avoid going into the son's room to mess with it until i fit the 12900k
as he wont stop moaning that i kicked him off his pc for 30 mins to mess with it
so was asking other owners so i dont have to check

also its in the default software switch mode atm its a 3 way switch

if either of my sons moaned like that I`d block their computer for a week especially after trying to improve their computer !

Ditto. But my son is 23 and trying to get his life together after graduating college during a pandemic, and he’s the one often helping me with my builds or settings now.

Between 2008 and 2020 I had stopped building PCs and got into Macintosh, but introduced him to Linus Tech Tips after graduating in 2020, and now he’s built 7 PCs for himself and friends, including 2 of my 3 systems. I built my current 6900XT/5800X rig myself (he built my 3080Ti/5950X rig and my 3070Ti/11700K rig).

What's the full spec on this system?

Oh Dear! I had to remove my 6900XT to install my970 Evo Plus in the M.2 slot #2 that is covered by the GPU, so I could install a 980 Pro into the 1st M.2 slot, and the 3-pin RGB header had a pin break off. Now I can't control the RGB with external apps Grrrrr!!!

I fired off an Email to Sapphire asking if I can get this fixed. Fortunately I have an Asus ROG 3070Ti or the 6700XT as a spare that I can drop into this PC while the 6900XT is gone, unless Sapphire refuses to touch it or I have to ship it to Hong Kong for $$$. Then I am truly forked.

I am so bummed. I'm even more disappointed in myself over how much I paid for this card at scalper prices, because at the time I was so eager to move up from my 6700XT. I got it in May when 6900XT/3090 GPUs were the most scarce in the USA and I overpaid so much that I don't want to admit by how much. It was still $1400 USD less than a 3090 at the time!

I was only familiar with this brand, for build quality, reliability, and warranty; so we'll see how good their customer service is. It has been a good card to me - it scored over 21600 on the GPU portion of Time Spy while air cooled on stock power limit (303W) (Overall Time Spy about 19800), and that beat my son's MSI Gaming X Trio RTX 3090 which barely hit 21000 for GPU after an EK water-block mod (runs only 10 degrees above ambient). My Asus ROG 3080 Ti has peaked at 20800 on the GPU portion at max overclock.

Sorry to hear that dude. Did you forget to unplug the rgb cable when removing the GPU?

I have done the same and bent my pins a little on my Sapphire Toxic Extreme, but I managed to straighten them up again mostly and they still work fine.

Gentlemen, I have a question: I can get a Sapphire Nitro+ radeon rx 6900 xt se at +30% price over what I would get the stock card from AMD. Is it a good deal in your opinion?

But is it a good model (build quality, cooling) in your opinion? How would you rate it compared to the AMD FE?
Yes it is a good model and has good cooling IMO. It will run cooler than the AMD version, but will be a bit louder but you can probably adjust the fan speed to make it silent.

AMD is really quiet in comparison to all cards.

i wouldnt say the cooling is that good its average at best
its a tad light in the aluminium department its 1.2kg
i was shocked how light it is in comparison to its size
it feels like a toy compared to my old sapphire vega 64 nitro+ se
its also about 350-400g lighter than the powercolor
