The Radeon VII Owners Thread

Hi all,

What are the aftermarket cooler options available for the R VII? Finding that the fans are getting very noisy now that I'm pushing the card with the new monitor. Delta between gpu temp and j temp is around 30c+, and playing Control game the fans are often ramping up to around 3500 range and considerably noisy. Hitting 105c j temp which seems make the fans ramp up that high.

Card is already undervaulted to 970mv. I've tried limiting fan speeds but that just means card hits the 110c limit and throttles. Tried with side of case off too, although airflow in my Corsair 540 case doesn't appear to be an issue.

Checked the screws holding the heatsink clamp on the back as some others have noted they sometimes aren't tight, but they seem fine.

I see that OCUK have morpheus II's back in stock https://www.overclockers.co.uk/raijintek-morpheus-ii-high-performance-vga-cooler-hs-027-rt.html. Read that these will fit the R VII, but not sure if it's a direct fit or needs some "tweaks".

I've seen articles with people modding NZXT kits to work on it but needs some adapting to fit. I do have an original intel RTS2011LC kit somewhere I could try, but don't think a single 120mm rad would be up to it? Again need some major modding especially if I want to keep the vrm cover plate too.

Could go the whole hog and get a water cooling setup - but think R VII waterblocks are hard to find now, not to mention the jump in cost and complexity.

I've run time spy extreme stress test and the temps and fans aren't anywhere near as bad as when playing Control - I often get fans suddenly jumping up to near max speeds, and jtemp hitting 105. It's hard to hear dialog without turning the volume up a lot, it's that bad. :( Just want things a bit quieter and not so noticable jumps.

Or just save the cash and get one of the next gen cards when they come out and hopefully a bit quieter..... decisions.

Decided to strip it down regardless, and sanded the base of the cooler more level since it was pretty concave. Lot more level now. Applied a generous amount of paste (Ceramique 2, all I have at the mo). Possibly a degree or two better, but fans still ramping up. Been checking temps of vrms and such and all seem ok - and from what I've seen from a few you tube videos the vrms don't even get too hot with no cooling at all on them.

As mentioned for some reason it doesn't seem to get as hot/loud in time spy stress test, running at 99% gpu usage and not throttling at all. Just seems to be Control that's pushing it a bit more (not sure why?). Last game I played a lot of was borderlands 3, and don't think that was as bad either. Wierd.

Might bite the bullet for my sanity and raid my collections of nuts and bolts and various heatsinks and see what I can do. :D
 
Thanks mate. I did wonder if the vii would be able to actually do 144hz......

Not sure now whether I'll bother at the mo then. Not an easy thing to be able to test is it really without actually taking the plunge and buying a monitor to test it with.
I think one possible issue to look at will be how much the Ryzen 1600 would hold you back say vs a 3600. Even the 3300x would push more FPS. Depending on the ram you currently have that would be a slight limiting factor too. 3600Mhz is the sweet spot for Zen 2. (C16 kits from crucial £89.99 direct)

They are normally B grade as a customer return or I this case last one, maybe damaged packaging? Might be worth a call into sales and ask.

Stocks are a little limited currently but that's the sort of thing you'd need for a GPU only loop. Its just a matter of adding a CPU block if you wanted to tame your 3900X and a 2nd rad would be a good idea too.

Nice article, it would appear that its something like 10fps. Got so used to gaming at 4k being GPU bound I didn't factor that in. I'm not planning on a CPU refresh until the 4000's drop. Then I'll likely get a 3600/3700x maybe.

In the end, I ordered a 1440p 144hz dell monitor from another retailer to see what the fuss was about. Loved 144hz, its amazing but I couldn't deal with the lack of clarity at 1440p. I know that's against what most say but for me, I love the graphical detail 4k brings.

Decided to send it back and now am deciding which 4k 144hz monitor to buy :D:D:D

I can push 70 to 80 fps on modern warfare with the settings set to low. Still looks a lot better than 1440p. I also reckon with resolution scaling set to 80% in game and RIS in play I won't notice the difference and gain another 10 or so fps. Would make the difference I'm after I reckon.

I've picked up a 3600 for my daily rig. The newer zen 2 silicon seems to be slightly better hence the xt chips due shortly. I'm running 4.3ghz all core will just 1.2v, 3600mhz ram with c14 1.46v. All coupled with a Rx550 lol. That's on a 32" Samsung 4k panel.

It's just about getting a CPU at a fair price currently as they are a little inflaited currently. Ram speed and timing will help too. The zen 2 stuff with all that done really brings the 1% and 0.1% lows up to which even at 4k makes for a better gaming experience.
 
Interesting - installed the 20.4.2 whql drivers (already had the initial release 20.4.2 drivers) and playing control again I'm not getting the sudden jumps in fan speed up to 3500+. Still nearing 3000 rpm and j temp hit 110 on occasion, but seems to be better managing things now. Don't know what's changed for the whql drivers, but wouldn't have thought anything if they are same versions.

Also noticed a new driver version just been released too - 20.5.1, and the R VII even get's a mention in the notes this time. :)
 

I'll need to do some reading up and planning if I want to go the "proper" water cooling route. Any reason for the bigger piping given most stuff I checked so far seems to use 13/10 mm?

Have spotted this - interesting rad and pump combo. Wonder if I could hook this up to the R VII plate with suitable connectors? Seems like it would be a higher quality AIO like unit - would it be up to the job of cooling the R VII?

I suggested the 13/19mm fittings as they where good value for money. There's no massive difference from tubing size, more how you want it to look. Which case are you currently using? Knowing the case I can give a more accurate setup based on that.
 
Just nabbed myself a Radeon VII. Any quick suggestions out of the box on what to do with it ? :D

Get the 20.5.1 driver installed and check what your default Voltage is in the performance tab in tuning. An undervolt does wonders. 80-100mv is normally doable, and tweak the fans to the point you can live with.

As Jenny has said, undervolting on these cards is a great idea, lower temps and lower fans :)

I have a corsair 540 air case. Could fit either a 240/360 or 280 rad at the front, and/or possibly a 280 or 240 rad on top. If I decide to go all out and get a cpu block as well, would a thicker 280/360 rad on front be sufficient on it's own? Lot's of "wasted" space in psu/hdd compartment, just need to figure out where a pump & res would go (and how to fasten everything down) and best tubing routing.

Not done water cooling since I bought an early asetek watercooling kit many years ago (that had an aquarium pump! Pretty noisy too) - didn't end well since the perspex cover on the gpu waterblock cracked and leaked everywhere. :(

I wouldn't spend money on making the Radeon VII quieter or cooler at this point. Edit the fan curve to a volume you can tolerate, and find your lowest stable voltage.

AMD and Nvidia's next gen series will have low midrange cards (think 3060, rx570) that will be faster than the Radeon VII while most likely using 100-200W less power (so much cooler running too).

Just my $2 as a RadeonVII owner from Day 1 (feb 2019).

Thanks - that's my other train of thought. I also got my R VII on launch day, and my most expensive gfx purchase to date. Only really noticing noise now that I recently upgraded to a freesync monitor and card is being pushed hard all the time.

Card defaults to 1060mv, and I runs fine at 970mv but becomes unstable at 960mv.

I keep on hearing of big jumps in GFX card performance and power consumption savings between generations but normally dissappointed. Will see what happens this time around.

As mentioned a few posts back, installing the whql drivers seems to have stopped the sudden high speed fan hikes while playing control (which was very annoying and distracting), although fans do wind up quite a bit generally.

Edit: On this hot day, jtemp is hitting 112c (edge temp 77c) and card is throttling a little. Also have the issue with the air going into the chipset fan, which is also getting toasty and ramping up beyond 5k rpm. :O I guess watercooling would move the heat away from the board too.
