The RX Vega 56 Owners Thread

Sapphire "Intelligent Fan Control III" overrides any software that tries to controls the fans :( And it's not possible to change the IFC3 fan curve.

Loads of Sapphire owners complaining about it. I should have done a bit more research given that I got shot of my Sapphire 480 because of loud fans!!

Feel like such an idiot!

Well that sucks, just did some reading about it, why the **** would Sapphire do this?

Glad i ended up with the PowerColor now as i coudnt find any Sapphire 56's at the time anyway.

I usually go with Sapphire too.

Hmmm, I've managed to set my own fan curve in wattman and have zero rpm enabled.
It just needs a bit of tweaking. If you save a profile with zero rpm enabled, then create your own fan curve it does switch off zero rpm, but you can save and load profiles and it does then allow zero rpm be enabled. Once you manage it, save that profile.
If it resets at any point you just have to load and load again to get it back

What JJ said, you can use zero rpm mode in waatman, flashed to a 64 bios and it wasn't available anymore, but on lowest rpm fan was silent through case, so wasn't a problem

Picked up a Vega 56 for quite cheap quite recently, but only just pushed it for the first time about a week ago running some very unoptimized software that jumped the GPU to 100% the moment it launched and didn't really budge from there. Unknowingly I let it run like that, where the VDDC VR spiked to >105*C in a few minutes and caused a thermal shutdown.
Have since replaced the thermal paste and pad(s) as per a guide I found around for the seemingly notorious problem for Strix cards in that area and now its much, much better. However, the VDDC VR temperature still slowly creeps up to 100*C after a long period of running the card under high load and then starts inching over, and obviously thats not sustainable.

Any opinions on what would be the next best step short of returning it for this? I'm thinking undervolting/clocking just a tad until the cooling can keep it under control, any software that would be best for that?

Just use Wattman. Plenty of guides on here if you do a bit of searching.

As a starting point set GPU State 6 to 1080, and GPU State 7 to 1100. Then set memory frequency State 3 Max to 950, and memory voltage control to 1050 for State 3 Max. Set Power Limit to +50.

what was your previous psu that was making the noise?

Corsair CX550M.

Not even in Wattman? My Red Dragon seems fine using Wattman fan curves but Zero RPM never works for me with any of my overclocks, have to hit the reset button to stop fans spinning and when i do this it idles at 30 something degrees.

Hope you get it sorted, after all the waiting you did for the right price just to get issues with it.

For me if I use Wattman interface only it also turns 0 rpm off and grays the button if I set a custom fan curve. But you can open the saved profile in notepad, there are many lines labelled "Feature ID =", the one that refers to the 0 rpm feature is Feature ID = "18". For this change the word False to True in both places, save it and reload it twice. The fan curve will be the one you set, but the 0 rpm feature is on. Also if you further edit and overwrite or "save as new" the same profile, the feature continues to stay on.

<FEATURE ID="18" Enabled="False"> ---> becomes Enabled="True"
<STATES>
<STATE ID="0" Enabled="False" Value="0"/> ---> becomes Enabled="True"
</STATES>
</FEATURE>

So is the 56 still the best bang for buck gpu.? Been paying the gears 5 tech test over the weekend. My CPU seems to hit 85-90% but the GPU is screaming. It's a780ti so getting on a bit now.

yes I think that the vega 56 is still the best bang for buck. Also I can verify that it is perfectly good for a single 4k monitor (mine is only 60hz) in the games that I play (world of warships - >76fps, Warhammer 2) on highest settings.

Yeah the 5700 might be a good shout.

I do plan on upgrading CPU at some point but that's too big of an out lay at the moment as I need new mobo and ram.

I only game at 1080p and have no excuse to upgrade monitor currently

the RX 5700 should last you years. For me with 1440 and 4k monitors it is over kill but if you need 144hz for fast shooters then it will last you even through monitor upgrades.

I've had the 780ti since 2014 so not a serial upgrader. Think the 5700 is going to be the one. Although being a blower one, aren't they normally hot and noisy?

Hotter than AIB designs for sure, and obviously not as quiet, but not as hot or loud as some people have made out. I certainly haven't had any issues with mine, aside from all that hot air being pumped into an already hot room.... I really need air con! :o

If you can wait until August, then the AIB designs should be out, and depending on the price (they may or may not be a lot more expensive) they will probably be the better option.

Will try that then. Ta.

There's loads of people saying it's not possible to control fans on Sapphire Vega cards. Wish I'd known that before!!!
Never had a problem controlling fans on my Sapphire Vega 56 Pulse. I'm using Afterburner though cos AMD's toolkit doesn't have enough granularity.

I can wait til August. It's only a month away. Wife's birthday this month so that will take any of my spare change that I have.

Cheers for the help all. Will for sure be joining team red though.

Does this issue only apply to the Nitro card? I have full control over the fans with Wattman if I want to. I did not install any of the Sapphire software though, because other than MSI Afterburner 3rd party software like Sapphire's fan control software is almost invariably junk.

I just ordered the Vega 56 Pulse today, after bouncing around between the RTX 2070 Super (it's very inflated price bothers me given that its gains aren't anywhere as large) and 5700XT (mostly scared off by the reference cooler).

It just seemed at £259.99 to be a bit unbeatable in terms of value, and I'm sucker for price/performance - my monitor is only 1080p though it is 144hz. Figured I'd at least give it a try first, if it doesn't cut it then I'll move on from there, but also read lots of good things about undervolt/overclocking this card to get some nice free gains out of it haha.

If there are any undervolt/overclock guides that are reliable I'd appreciate it :D.
