The RX Vega 56 Owners Thread

I've got pulse 56, and just finished playing fortnite, i'm using AMD r7 1700 @3.7, with balanced power plan on 4k i'm getting around 80fps, haven't noticed any stutter. though i'm still on 19.12.3 drivers. will update them tonight, if there will be any difference, i'll let you know.

Think I snagged the last B grade, I was planning on waiting for big navi but the £/performance at £180/vega56 was too good to ignore. Tempted to stick an AIO on it but I'll see how it goes.

Good move. By all accounts the Pulse cooler does a very good job, partly I think because it's 2x the length of the card so air passes through it very efficiently.

Mine's been shipped and could be here tomorrow.

I dug-out the big PSU and stuck a quieter fan in it.

One more sleep 'till Christmas... :)

You wont be disappointed- its a great card for 1440/60+ or 1080/120+. If you intend to OC it then I recommend the following settings. These were recommended to me by another forum user so can't take the credit but they have proven to be the best for me from a performance-power POV, and I've tested many different configurations right up to 1702 MHz with 50% PL.

GPU freq P6/P7 = 1567/1637
GPU mV P6/P7 = 1000/1075 (you might get P7 to as low as 1025 but this wasnt reliable for me)
Power limit = 15% (going above this gives diminishing returns in terms of frames per W so how high you go will depend on whether efficiency or raw power is your objective)
VRAM freq = 980 (mileage will vary with this depending on whether Samsung or Hynix HBM2, 950 MHz should be achievable. Note that although the VRAM mV appears to allow changes it doesnt actually change as is locked by the card bios)
Max fan speed = 60% (keeps max RPM around 1900)

Max gaming gpu power for this config is around 207 W according to HWINFO with hotspot temp reaching ~79C. Using Chill (or similar) as a frame limiter can reduce this some if you are heavily over rendering frames above your monitor refresh rate.

Have fun

@5t3v0 thanks for that. I'll give it a try once settled in, although I'm not too worried about performance per watt so will probably go with a higher power limit (is that the one that tops-out at 50%?)

Yeah that's the one. You'll need a higher fan max though if pushing for horse power. In my testing, this was my highest OC profile before thermal throttling starting to kick in:

GPU freq P6/P7 = 1567/1672
GPU mV P6/P7 = 1000/1075
Power limit = 50%
VRAM freq = 980
Max fan speed = 80%

At this OC the hotspot temp reached 84C with fan speed hitting around 2400 rpm (loud!)

Does anyone play gta 5 on a pulse and struggle at 1440p when the action starts going like if u start shooting ppl through windows when driving to get the cops to chase you and cause a menace. I had to put the power limit up to avoid stutter, i can sorta play ok if i just drive about not causing issue at stock but if action i had to put the limit up to avoid it and keep it smooth with a lot going on. Might be settings i dunno there about medium to high. Probs my cpu tho and the +50 power just brute forces it to be smoother with action going on.

I get similar on BL3 when the action gets intense although that's a different engine. It averages around 90fps but is limited to 70 using Chill, however it fluctuates a lot during action. Hadn't thought to try using a higher PL. Currently using 15% to keep power down. Will give 50% a try

Edit: Just played a BL3 slaughter shaft with PL at 50% and it did "feel" less choppy so you could be onto something. Thinking how I might replicate and measure it. The benchmark is no good as not enough action to stress the card

My card should arrive today. Is there a particular driver version I should use or do I just go for the latest?

I'll need Wattman for tuning/undervolting too, right?

Anything else?

Well that's a big discussion topic and ultimately will need to be decided through your own trial and error. The 2020 drivers, which actually started in version 19.12.2 have been a bit controversial since the whole UI changed, some features like FRTC have gone while other features like Boost, integer scaling, image sharpening, anti lag etc were added or expanded. Wattman also became performance tuning but works the same except the ability to set min and max P states is removed. Stability and performance of the new drivers have also been variable. I've found all 20 drivers to be ~8% slower in BL3. I'm also finding the latest driver to be unstable but the previous verson, 20.2.1, was good. As always ymmv. If you're playing new titles or need features like boost, then go for the newer drivers, otherwise maybe consider starting out with 19.12.1 which was the last good driver before the 20 revamp.

Im on 19.12.1 as last stable before 2020 drivers, but they did put out a compatible enterprise edition drivers which use the old interface but newer driver, just some gaming features are off like enhanced sync which i think everyones been told most places doesnt work or isnt stable and causes issues. Up to u.

It's arrived, sweeties too. Marvellous - thanks OcUK!

@Kaapstad I'm late to the party but is the list still active?

Does anyone know what thickness thermal pads the Vega 56 Pulse has? Considering doing a repaste and I'd want to have replacement pads on hand just in case the ones in there need replacing too.
