The Samsung NC20 thread

I see the NC20 is on QVC as todays TSV of course as usual you can find it cheaper online like i did

And thats even after its todays special value so will go up in price at midnight tonight, of course you do have easy payments and can send it back within 30 days but i dont think many will as i have the black NC20 and it's excellent, i absolutely love it and it's easily the best netbook currently available.

Which makes it even more puzzling is the lack of information online about it and its performance with pre 2004 games compared to the NC10 and threads on the NC20 on forums are very quiet also, it seems people are more into the NC10 and N120, all in all very disappointing i like to read other people opinions of it but there isn't much on the net.

If anyone is interested I've devised a way to patch the microcode on system startup for a small free bump in performance.

1. Get the latest version of RW-Everything: http://jacky5488.myweb.hinet.net/download.html and install it.

2. Create a file in the install directory with the following text microcodepatch.rw:

>cpu 1
>wrmsr 0x00001203 0 0x24000018
>rwexit

3. Create a short cut to the rw.exe then right click it and give it the following target:

"C:\Program Files\RW-Everything\RW" /Command=microcodepatch.rw /Logfile=logfile.txt

4. You can then place that in your start folder.

This works great for me but remember USE AT YOUR OWN RISK :)

Been playing with my NC20 for a few days now and tbh its not the great upgrade from my aspire one I had been hoping.

* Also it runs much hotter meaning the fan never stops, its not loud but still using the fan control tools I could get my aspire one browsing the net in silence with reasonable temps.

I run mine in silent mode (function +running man) and I can't tell the difference performance wise (multiple poker tables+database+browser) but it runs much cooler and the fan only kicks in when loading a new program.

Is there a refresh planned? Looking at getting a notebook July'ish. Interested in the larger screen on the NC20, but would prefer it came with the better battery as featured in the NC110. If they're not going to sell a version with more juice, can you swap the battery out for a third party version?

Yes you can. It has the same battery fittings as the NC10 which also makes it easier finding one that will fit.

This guy here bought a 7800mAH 9 cell battery which gave significant battery life gains. I think I'll be doing the same thing once I have mine.

how much is it for an uber battery?

this is top of my netbook list at the mo but dont need it till end of august. Hoping it'll be cheaper by then :)

I think the 7800mah ones are around the £45 mark on that popular auction site!

Most of them are shipping from china though

I recieved my nc20 yesterday and i must say, I LOVE IT.

Was boshing away at football manager 2009 on my lunch break today, and browsing through-out today and the battery is still got an hour or so left on it (standard battery)

Does it use the same gfx chipset as NC10? if so then it should be fine as my NC10 runs Win7 with no cpu usage in Aero, in fact the sidebar gadgets used more CPU than dwm :p

It runs win7 aero fine, I get a score of 3.1 in the performance index which is decent enough. Also a good 64-bit chrome driver out now to.

These do look really good but I think there is going to be a big drawback to these netbooks with better graphics solutions.

At the end of that article it says that one European retailer was listing them at 462 euros excluding VAT. So that works out at 462 x 1.175 = 542 and 542 euros is about £460.

Assuming the above is correct, then I wouldn't be surprised if we see them here for close to the £500 mark which would be far too much for a netbook in my opinion.

32 bit, and no it idles as it should, about 3>6% on taskmanager the rest is idle.

Having said that I find cpu a little sluggish compared to my old aspire one dispite the nano coming out on top in a lot of benchmarks. I think the lack of HT really affects how the general usage feels.

I'm actually going to be selling my nc20 in a few days, its been a let down if i'm honest....Plus, I found a brand new Asus U1E on ebay for £425 which I got the other day and it it blows the nc20 out of the water, its smaller, lighter, comes with a core 2 duo which is literally twice the speed, way better integrated gfx (x3100) came with 2gb ram, usb dvd burner, finger print reader, 2 batteries (3 and 6 cell), asus wireless mouse, better quality screen (11") it doesn't look as washed out as the nc20. Plus it runs cooler and lasts longer on the battery and the quality of it is amazing, real leather palm rests etc, it makes the nc20 look and feel (and run) like a toy.

I think there are some real bargain ultraportables out there which have just plummeted in price due to this netbook craze, you just need to do your home work.
