*** The SKY F1 2012 Coverage Thread ***

Sorry I should have elaborated.

I know its only the first race (Which maybe should have had higher viewing figures for Sky with all the hype).

Just shows that a lot of people haven't crossed over to Sky and blows a big hole in Bernies theory that Sky having the rights would increase live viewing figures.

Just copied this from another motorsport forum, if its true then wow.

Shocker as free to air coverage beats paid for subscription?

Sky are never going to beat the BBC's viewing figures, there will always be more people who watch terrestrial and don't have satellite/cable.

I would be interested to know what MOTD figures are like versus a live game on Sky Sports.

A more compatible weekend will be when shown on both at the normal 1pm slot.

The margin might be even greater then, BBC will certainly come out on top in the ratings purely based on numbers of people who have access to each platform.

Is that just Sky or including Virgin do you know?

With it being the first one I bet there some people watched at least some of the BBC coverage even after watching Sky Sports just to see what it was like... I know I was watching the end of it to see what it was like.

As I thought, he never said the live figures would grow, just the audience in total, which is perfectly possible (The combined figures for Australia are the same as the BBC figures from last year).

Are you sure?

Sky Live: 874,000 viewers
BBC Highlights: 2.7 million viewers (both official average figures from BARB)

Just before anybody wheels out the "they were not like for like because it was a different time of day" excuse:

2011 Aus GP on BBC1 Live was 2.13 million viewers.

Are you sure?

Ha, not any more after I realised I've got my figures the wrong way round. I added 2.13m to 560,000 to get around 2.7m. My bad, sorry.

But what Bernie said about the audience growing is very different to claiming the live audience would grow. The first one is perfectly possible, the latter is simply impossible as there just aren't enough Sky customers in the world to make up the difference.

What Bernie said about any audience growing was a blatant and obvious falsehood. Everyone who can watch the Sky coverage now could already watch the BBC coverage last year. Basic arithmetic and common sense says that the audience must shrink with the move to Sky, because there are people who watched last year who cannot watch now.

because there are people who watched last year who cannot watch now.

No there aren't. There are if you are counting live figures, but Bernie isn't. He just said the audience in general. The available total audience is the same now as it was last year.

Edit: Having got my brain in gear and re read what people have said, the figures supporting Bernies claims are already in this thread for the Australian GP.

2011 BBC Live Figures = 2.13m
Total Audience in 2011 = 2.13m

2012 Sky Live Figures = 874,000
2012 BBC HL Figures = 2.7m
Total Audience in 2012 = 3.574m

The audience for the Australian GP this year was 1.444m viewers greater than 2011.

Not really, as said I bet lots watched the live broadcast and the highlights, be a better idea when they both cover the same race live. I doubt F1 gained 1.4 million viewers over the winter tbh.

Does it take into account all the people who used someone else's SkyGo account?

I watched both as well so I'll be skewing the stats.

When the BBC get a full race I'll be watching it on there though, just so I get it in HD. :)

Your right, we need a live race on both channels for a proper comparison. Theres a lot of potential issues with those figures.

Its worth considering though that 1pm is a far more sociable hour than 6am so I would expect the BBC viewers to be higher simply based on that. The casual viewer doesn't get up at 6am, but they might chill and watch it at 1am?

Actually, I think the best comparisons will be when the race is live on Sky at 1pm and highlights only on BBC later in the afternoon. The live on both channels races should pull the same figures as last year, but the non live BBC races that are at sociable hours is the best bet for including the casual viewer as well as the hard core fan. When's the first one of those race? Bahrain isn't it?

Edit: yeah, Bahrain. Live on Sky at 1pm, on BBC at 5:30pm. I think that's going to be the best indicator.

One point I'd make about the apparent increase in viewers on the BBC - Last year I watched the race on the iPlayer after I got up, because I didn't fancy an early start to watch it live. I'd be curious as to whether many other people did this too, because if so, it distorts the maths, since those only listed live viewers.

EDIT: Oh, I see you kind of made that point above me. Welp.

So were down to complaining about the image they use for the drivers face now? Wow, we really are scraping the bottom of the barrel for things to moan about, aren't we
Sheesh, you'd think this was a thread for posting the occasional gripe about Sky coverage wouldn't you?

I didn't see anyone getting particularly upset about it, until you came in.

The graphics and presentation style is exactly the same as what Sky do for football.

You don't find football central full of posts moaning about the graphics and the constant reminders of what channel they are watching etc..

Its just because its new, everybody feels the need to moan about stuff they wouldn't normally moan about.
