The Sony A73/A7R3/A7S3/A9 Thread

Mine's on route, just need to sort out a lens for which I'm hoping Black Friday will be the solution. It looks like buying at £1599.99 was a good time, as, like you say, it's back up to £1749.99, but only time will tell. Oh, and memory cards - they're usually a few on offer around BF time.

Ordered myself an A7C. Having a hard time deciding which general purpose zoom to get.

Sigma 24-70 f2.8, better range, better quality all round.
Tamron 28-75 f2.8, less useful range, good enough quality, lightweight.
Sony 24-105 f4, slower, best range.

Since you didn't mention price I assume it is not a criteria then get the best all round, the Sigma.

My body arrived, but I haven't opened it yet as I haven't got any lenses for it. :D

Do you have any recommendations for an inexpensive lens, maybe a prime, to tide me over until I sell my Canon gear? £300ish? Something that will remain useful in my kit bag and not immediately become redundant once I've bought something else.

I mainly take family pictures - so family walks in the woods with the dog, the kids playing.

The 28mm f2 can be had for around £300. Excellent general purpose prime, light weight and great for travel too.

I love this camera! I got the 50mm 1.8 and whilst I realise it's generally regarded (by online reviewers) as not that great a lens, I wanted something cheap to get me going and Amazon had it on next day delivery with payments over 5 months, so I couldn't resist. It got delivered 30 minutes ago and I'm playing in the living room. This snapshot of my daughter, shot at ISO12800 is, in my eyes, fantastic! I could never have got this shot on my 7D, especially at such a high ISO. (Straight from the card.)

I wouldn't call the 50mm f1.8 junk I love mine, probably the best value lens I have. Image quality is good only let down by poor AF speed. For £120 it's a bargain.

Got my A7C, amazing bit of kit. Only thing I've lost compared to my A7R is the resolution.
AF is so much better it's not even funny, the EVF was the only thing I was concerned about but I needn't have worried it's fine, yes it would be nice if it was bigger but it is nice and clear and a high refresh rate one, it will do the job just fine.
Lack of dials and buttons is a non issue as well for me.

I'm loving my A7iii and it's Sony's AF that's the difference. With my 7D I was lucky to get 30-50% success rate. Now I'm getting +90%.

I'm currently configuring the menus and allocating features to the buttons. That's one thing I'm not enjoying - Sony's menu system.

As was recommended to me, map EyeAF to one of the back buttons. :)

After watching many videos on how people have been setting up their cameras (benefit of it being a few years old, I guess) that was one of the first things I did. :) I used to use back-button focusing and quite a bit of focus/recompose on my 7D, but I haven't found the need with the A7iii, the AF has so many points and works so well. I'm currently working on a way to quickly and easily toggle between human/animal eye tracking as I mainly photograph my dog/kids.

I have mine set so the shutter button does all the eye-af/tracking and the back button does standard single focus works well for me. The video record button reset to toggle between human and animal.

I have eye AF toggle on/off and human/animal in the fn menu. AF-ON is my regular (ie moveable with the stick) AF point and AEL is my registered AF point (zone).

Just a heads up on very.co.uk and the sony cashback offer. The invoice you get sent with the a7iii will not work. I had to call very.co.uk and ask them to send me a full VAT receipt and proof of purchase. I submitted both of these to Sony and they have now processed the cashback offer and I should see it hit my account sometime in the next 28 days. Certainly not as easy as other years when I have used Amazon but it has worked. It doesn't look like there is any cashback on Sony camera kit on Amazon at all this year. Anyhow, its a fantastic bit of kit, much better than the A7ii and I couldn't be happier with it.
