The Sony A73/A7R3/A7S3/A9 Thread

Well, went through a lot of changes recently, as I managed to get an Mark 3 at a stonking price.

I had put it off when I hadn't got what I wanted in trading the Mark 2, but when I could essentially get it for £1K less, well, it was a no brainer.

So I am sticking with the Mark 3 and Mark 2 as secondary/backup camera. I still love the Mark 2 - it's only real downfall is speed.

Have picked up a few other items recently too:

The Batis 135mm and Mark 3 have barely left the house due to fighting off nasty bugs, and the 24-105mm only arrived yesterday, so not left the house at all.

Will be selling off the 24-240mm due to having the 24-105mm.

Still waiting on Batis 18mm - which may or may not replace the 16-35mm F4.

Been expensive, but I pretty much have every lens I want now. There was temptation for an 85mm, but given I have the 90mm G, and don't really shoot portraits, I can make do without that one. But it probably remains the only lens I will want in the future.

On the Mark 3, for the little walk I took with it the other day, it's a wonderful upgrade to the Mark 2. So responsive.

Holy crap.

Seriously guys, I am entering a new world of satisfying photography with this camera. I have never in my life had such amazing results in portraiture... the combination of a7rIII and 85mm f1.8 is absolutely phenomenal. Eyes are in focus and pin sharp, and the out of focus rendering is absolutely gorgeous. Even the 28mm f2 has very pleasing bokeh, and it is surely a must buy for every Sony owner.

I will post some samples when I process them after Christmas, until then please accept my apologies but I am just writing down my thoughts. Never have I been so gobsmacked by the visual quality (artisticness aside, I am talking pure aesthetics )of my photos.. :)

Has been a slow year photography wise for me, but the A7 mk1 got a walk out over Xmas in the peaks and I'm reminded how great a package it is. At the moment I have

24-240
Leica 50 1.4
Voigtländer 35 1.4

Really tempted to sell the Leica, should be able to straight swap for the 85 1.8 and 28 f2...

Just sold all my phase one kit, (partially due to life changes, and other stuff) but looking to move to an A7R iii with the new 16-35 F2.8 G lens,

Has anyone used the 16-35 F2.8? it looks very good, possibly the best wide-angle SLR lens you can buy (looking at it's performance)

No, but it had better be good for that price. You could get 3 Nikon 16-35mm f/4 VR's for that price and that Nikon lens is superb :)

Why are you referring to the Nikon 16-35mm f4 as though it is any cheaper than the Sony 16-35mm f4? The Sony 16-35mm f4 is also the same price as the Nikon 16-35mm f4 and a notably better performer in terms of sharpness.

The only Sony 16-35mm f2.8 vs Nikon pricing comparison that makes any logical sense in this instance is with the comparable lens in its class, the Nikon 14-24mm f2.8 which is only around £100 cheaper than the Sony 16-35mm f2.8, is less sharp and less versatile in focal range and doesn't take screw-in filters. Not to mention much heavier.

The Sony 16-35mm f2.8 is indeed pricey, it's a high-end professional lens so that is to be expected, but all things considered is still better value than the Nikon and it is also the same price as the Canon 16-35mm f2.8 III. :)

The new Sony 16-35 looks to me like the first SLR lens that has good corner sharpness, so difficult to get sharp corners with wide angles, without spending a fortune on Rodenstock HR glass,

I might pick one up in the states next month, or at least have a go with one, the a7r iii's sensor looks amazing, with it able to hit almost 15 stops - quite remarkable

I've been undecided about this camera over the last couple of revisions, always wanted it, couldn't see the point in running it along side a D700/D810 but now with the dual card slots etc I am actually tempted to get this as a 3rd and a general life/walk around camera as the Nikon's are so heavy.

be warned. you may like it so much so that you sell your d810

Warranty is not worldwide it is regional, so ask yourself if the 20% saving is really worth the risk.

I nearly bought the mk2 over the D810 anyway :D

Wife wants to help out with weddings, she'll end up with the D700 ;)
Try the A7RIII for weddings side by side with a Nikon D810, see how it works out.

huh, I didn't know that - although it looks like you can get a brand new one off Ebay for a saving of a couple of hundred, so I'll probably do that - provided they're UK cameras and not imported obviously.. I'll check nearer the time,

Not sure what you're trying to say? it'll be a nightmare with 2 makes? it'll blow the D810 away or the D810 will smash it?

I was blown away moving the D700 to the D810, sadly I bought it just before the news about the D810 being replaced :D

Well I think it was quite a self-explanatory statement... "try the Sony and the Nikon together and see how it works out". Basically, try using them both for a shoot and see what you think when comparing them.

Ahhh, I read sarcasm when there wasn't any :D sorry! :D
Hah ahh I see, no of course no sarcasm, it wasn't appropriate! The D850 is a monster camera and I would be very interested in hearing your thoughts trying them side-by-side at a wedding to get your impressions of their similar and contrasting strengths and weaknesses. There's no better field test than a wedding anyway! :)
