The Suicide Squad 2021

The last movie was like a hodge podge of different edits slapped together and presented as a movie. Read something that said they had several different edits of the movie in the works at the same time.

That's what happens when the bean counters all have their 2 cents and dont let the director make the movie himself. Also see Batman vs Superman and Justice league for examples of that.

The first SS was basically done, then Deadpool came out and was a smash so WB hurriedly re-edited and reshot a lot of the movie entirely changing the tone.

Just look at the style of Ayers films prior to Suicide Squad... End of Watch, Harsh Times, Street Kings, Fury. It should have been a very different movie.

Its not even fair on Ayers. He only took over the movie something like 6 weeks before shooting etc. Thats no prep time for a film.

Unless I have it wrong, I though it was the previous Director baled out. Ayers was left to pick up the pieces.

There's an element of truth here but it's more down to the editing. They basically butchered Ayers version very close to release to get it in line with Deadpools style as much as possible.

A good way to see this is find some early teasers and see the heavier tone, then find a trailer that dropped after Deadpool did well, it's a complete style change :(

Just checked on Wiki.

Ayer had six weeks to write the screenplay, given the release date was already set.[38]

So he was original director/writer but up against the clock from the start. I always found it hard to believe he'd write such a crap script considering he's done some consistently good, if not great films prior.

That said...End Of Watch is in my top 10 movies of all time.

Yea, I quite like his work as well and was excited to hear him doling SS. The result always seemed so off to me, so he had 6 weeks to pull it together, and as you said, multiple editors etc involved trying to make "light" versions because of Batman v Supes ( reviews saying it was too dark) Deadpool well received for one liners. Then followed 22million worth of re-shoots to get those "chuckle" scenes.
Thing was a disaster form the start, and I don't think its fair to blame Ayer for it, im sure his film was VERY different from what we got even with the little time he had.

Yeah they smelled the money and starting dicking around with the edits, first trailer dark and moody, second trailer suddenly goofy and all colourful. That's why DC movies underperform so much, the director can't make the movie he sets out to make without the beancounters having their say. Marvel movies seem to be the opposite of that.

Disagree, marvel just make the same movie over and over, by the numbers, hits all the points, arc persists.
Their interference started with a coherent pattern and sticking too it.

I enjoyed SS1 a lot more than any of the other recent DC films I've seen - BvS was particularly bad - but it wasn't brilliant. Mostly, I think I was carried along on a wave of Margot Robbie charisma.
