The tesco value thread

As you all probably already know, tesco value gorceries are often (but not always) just rebranded expensive brands. For example, obviously there is no tesco value biscuit factory, it is just a factory elsewhere that they stopped the production line and changed the packaging.

I am feeling like a cheapskate (and a poor student) and want to save a little on the ever increasing price of food shopping.

I will start off, tesco value butter (the blocks) is just country life butter in a different wrapper.

So let OCUK know what tesco value foods are good

Now im usually really fussy what i eat and drink but tesco value corned beef is really nice as is the tesco value lemon squash.

And i cant taste much difference between value beans, spaghetti, peas, carrots compared to branded ones

Well I know for a fact that Lidl's bread is the same as Tesco's own (not value, the more expensive one) just differently packaged.

Their bourbon biscuits are the same taste as known brand ones. I'm pretty sure they're the same.

Their diet coke is pretty decent, at I think 20 something pence it's a steal.

The Ready Salted Crisps taste nice but you only get 18g per pack. This is not so bad when you remember you get 12 packs for about 45p. They are thinner and tastier than Walkers IMO.

Tesco Healthy Living cheese spread is nicer than Dairylea

Tesco own brand Brie is almost as nice as decent French stuff and it's a fraction of the price.

Tesco Chocolate Orange biscuits are erm, very nice. No idea what "premium" brand they would relate to but imagine a Penguin with an orange creme centre replacing the usual chocolate.

They're the ones I can think of off the top of my head anyway.

I cant stand the value coke I hear the normal coke (37p one) is the same as pepsi though?? perhaps someone has both sorts at home and can do a test

I fine the normal tesco stuff it worth a little more than the value

Lemonade, Biscuits, Cola, Nappies etc

Also Salisbury's Value chilled microwave meals are yummy

I prefer Tesco Value chopped tomatoes in my bolognese compared to the Napolina (sp?) variety. I couldn't tell you why, it just turns out 'better'.

I can't think of anything else in the 'value' range which isn't pretty dire. The biscuits/chocolate/etc are ok but I try not to buy that sort of thing .

I buy Tesco 'premium' lager because it's very nice. Google suggests it's actually Grolsch but I'm taking that with a pinch of salt.

its called 'economic sabotage'....

yes a lot of the goods are identical but just re branded & for a very good reason

they make most of their money from the normal goods but there is still a market out there for chavs/students and it seems silly to loose out - to re brand the same goods as 'value' and make them unattractive they can keep on selling at a high price to normal customers and also make a bit of money from the chavs/students

similarly with computer components - identical processors sold at different clock speeds are probably the main reason most people got involved in overclocking a few years back and came to buy stuff from OcUK - the chip maker wants to produce a high end version and lower end versions but rather than re-design a lower spec one(more R&D costs) they just deliberately 'sabotage' the same product and sell it for less to cater for people with less cash.

Another one lots of people won't know about is the 'short cappuccino' at starbucks - it isn't included on the menu but there is a button for it on the till - basically a budget coffee for people who know it exists (students etc..) while they carry on selling more expensive drinks to customers prepared to pay more.

Tesco value chopped tomatoes and kidney beans are great in a chilli.
Once you have the spices and things added they taste no different to cans several times the price.

I find the value meats are not as good, probably abused and porked out with a bit more water / fat.

Tesco Value products rock. I simply cannot see the point in wasting my hard earned cash of premium "brands" just because they come in a nice package.

The Value Coke tastes like cough medicine. I have their other own brand coke, the caffeine free one with the gold label. Its actually very nice for the price.

I would imagine whilst some things are simply brand goods repackaged there must be a good number also are produced by the same people using the same process but with cheaper materials? so they may be close but using crappy ingredients.

I completely agree. There are very few tesco value products that I feel are substandard to either premium brands or even the more expensive tesco own brands.

The only thing I've tried so far thats not as good as a proper brand is their value super noodles. But at 9p a packet you can't complain too much.

I actually much prefer tesco value blackcurrant squash and their value choc chip cookies.

We use Tesco value baked beans and tinned tomatoes and they taste fine. The value ice-cream (vanilla) is ok too, especially when covered in chocolate sauce

Not keen on the value frozen peas or cola though.
