The tesco value thread

I only ever buy (premium) branded goods if I can taste a difference. So all dry pasta, Parmesen cheese, Chedder cheese (I usually go for the strong stuff), Pesto sauce and finest range sausages that actually have over 90% pork in it. Otherwise I can't be bothered.

One that I heard from a "mate" which has resulted in me only ever buying organic food from a farm :

Don't ever buy bagged supermarket organic labelled vegetables. They're washed at the same place as non organic. They're put into individual drums so that they can be rinsed. However if they've over filled one of them it's quicker just to place the excess into the nearest drum with spare capacity. This is done without taking care to find out first if the emptier drum contains organic or non organic goods already. Therefore there's not a single seperate process from field to bag as there's mixing going on - so never pay for organic marked bags as you might not be getting what you're paying a premium for!

Tinned Tesco value stuff is generally on par with the more expensive stuff... However, for things like meat and cheese - well, I wouldn't feed them to my dog.

Also, value paper towel is crap.

The missis loves the two stripe frozen chicken nuggets, though im sure there is no real chicken in there they do taste ok.

the tesco value frozen chicken fillets thing is really BAD!

full of water and salt, do not buy!

Tesco Value caramel shortbread (you know, with the shortbread, caramel, then chocolate) is excellent. I actually prefer it to their normal one, and you get a huge slab.
Not sure if they still do em, but the value Pot Noodles were delicious (especially the beef one).

Anyone remember the Parody Tesco value birthday card. I gave it to my mate once and he went ape **** thinking it was real :D

Their diet coke is pretty decent, at I think 20 something pence it's a steal.

No, no, no just no. All other cokes taste spicy, like pepsi. Only coke tastes like coke.

a lot of stuff might be rebranded, but in a lot of cases it is watered down or the recipe changed slightly. It is all computer controlled after all.

The number of suppliers and manufacturers is finite.

The number of lines a supermarket can supply at any one time is finite.

Your "value" brand is almost certainly produced in the same factory and definitely made to a similar specification. If you look for the supplier code on Tesco products it will be identical to the code seen on branded goods.

It's vertical branding and is prevalent in all food/product areas.

The tesco value cheesecake is yummy (as is ASDA's own brand cheesecake).

As are the beans, tinned toms, sweetcorns and tinned pots (esp in mayo for potato salad).

Yummy! Miss Tescos :(

pretty much anything they cant screw up will be ok, so nearly anything that's exactly as it was when it came out of the ground/was alive

the tinned curry is rancid though.

Can't say I have really given tesco or any other supermarket branded stuff the light of day as we usually shop at M&S (unless they dont have it) but I have shown this to the parents and were going to give it a bash :D

roll on cheapo coke

The Tesco cheapo chocolate swiss rolls are awesome, I've not had one for years though. Seem to remember they were about 15p when we last had them? :D

Tescos own brand nappies are pampers with a different picture & slightly less plastic.

Mars confectionary also supply a lot of their own brand chocolate (or at least they used too) - as do Thorntons (for their more expensive chocs)

I now shop at lidl every 2 weeks and save a fortune. I buy their tinned stuff, Olive oil, jars of stuff and all my Fruit and Veg for the week. Their Brown sauce, Ketchup and Shower gel is also very good, and is 1/3 of the price of the stuff I used to buy.

My last shop was £46 compared to around £100 I usually spend in Tesco for our household.
Our local Lidl has far superior (in terms of taste, freshness and price) fruit and veg than Tesco or Sainsburys (at 2/3 of the price) - The reason is their HGV fruit & Veg deliveries are more frequent than the other two at Belfast harbour. I know, because 3 of the lorry drivers I know worked for them all.

I now no longer feel the cost of name brands justifies the taste. Why buy HP brown sauce, Or a £3.50 bottle of named Olive oil - when I can get a product that really does taste just as good at half its price.

You know, I went into my local tesco's today... and what do I see..

Buy one get one free, on a four pack of John Wests Tuna, 4 tin pack, only £4.54 or something similar... that's over a pound a tin normally...

or tesco's value... 29p a tin..

Since I usually have tuna stirred into something else, I'm not all THAT fussed..

And the coke (37/44p) is good stuff... drink far too much of it..
