The Tesla Thread

Again, no, BMW have also been doing this since iDrive 7
I think it depends on the extent and frequency of features added as there is a lot of difference between map updates and the occasional bugfix and new functionality. For example Tesla have added. Dashcam functionality, power/acceleration increases, range improvements, Blind spot cameras, and more. A quick google brought up this

Defender has a large number of SOTA modules, so will have updates to the ABS module, chassis control module, ADAS, Powertrain control Module etc aswell as the infotainent, then if you look at stuff above is more in the sense of whats now termed FOTA. For example JLR has introduced Alexa integration as a Feature Over the Air

Its a moving beast thats for sure, this new era of software updates.

So its only Tesla that does updates for the whole car?
Nope - Polestar have been doing car improvement OTA updates for 2 years, amongst others they have been :

- increased the efficiency of energy use
- increase the useable the battery amount
- Added battery pre-heat when selecting charging in the Nav
- improved the DC charging speed/curve
- Added Eco Climate control
- Electric motor optimisations
- improved the wireless phone charging
- Improved ACC
- improved radio reception
- They even changed the up & down speed of the electric windows

They even changed the up & down speed of the electric windows

But why?

Some of this stuff is fundamental - it should be in a completed state before the car is sold to the buyer not changed after purchase. How can something like the up and down speed of the electric windows require a change? When in the history of car production has a manufacturer previously decided that the electric window speed needed to be changed after delivering cars to customers, not including safety recalls?

On some cars the windows weren't closing properly so they rolled out a fix which included the speed change.

Cars are items of tech now and running many different software platforms. Software is always developing over time so why not improve it, rather than waiting 'x' years for the facelift and then more years for the next model.
If there is a fault (minor or major) which can be improved/resolved without visiting a garage then i'm all for it.

Plus wasn’t the old model to send the car out with buggy unfinished software, don’t bother updating it at service appointments and hope to fix it for the next model year?

You prefer a letter and a trip to the dealer at their convenience?

Whilst I do get slightly excited about every software release, I feel like Fox does have a point. It’s taken 4 years since the release of the Model 3 to be able to independently choose which rear door you want to apply the child lock to. Prior to one of the most recent software updates, it was both doors or nothing which isn’t good enough.

If there is one thing that continues to impress me about the latest 60kwh standard range car, it’s the real recharging speed.

It doesn’t seem to really matter at what SOC you plug in at, the car seems to be able to take a big initial bust of power.

Last night I plugged in to a V3 at 50% SOC and it initially ramped up to 135kw. When I got back to the car after a quick pit stop, it was at 90% and still taking 50kw.
