Wow holy ****, this thread really has gone south in a matter of a week and turned from a relatively sensible discussion into an epic example of anal, petty and pedantic back and forth between weenie fan boys from both camps. It's at the same time tragic yet hilarious. :D

I'm sorry, AMD, it wasn't the drivers

TL;DR:
I spent an entire day troubleshooting a “drivers issue”, but it turns out the drivers were fine all along. What really happened is that I forgot that I had my PC plugged into a cheap power cord, and plugging it directly into the wall not only fixed the black screens issue, but even improved performance by getting rid of the stuttering I was getting on some games when it worked. I was an idiot for letting my prejudices towards AMD GPUs blind me on the stupidly easy solution that should have been obvious from the start if “drivers issues” weren’t my first assumption.

Words of wisdom right there.

Christ I don't need more things to throw money at this month, I almost pulled the trigger on a 3090 because I can't be arsed waiting for stock. Luckily for me someone bought it while I was looking for my card.
So sign from God, I'm supposed to get a 6900xt :p;):D

Looking for AIB reviews of the 6800xt
  • Sapphire Nitro+
  • Power Color Red Devil
  • Gigabyte Aorus
  • Asus Strix
  • MSI Tiachi

Things to look for:
  • Performance over OEM while OC? Is it higher do to better cooling? Do you better higher vram OC? Do to higher GPU OC?
  • Phases...not just the # of them but what kind used
  • Max OC of the card. Is it the same as OEM or higher
  • Cooling. How well does the card stay cool at those higher OC's. Since Ref. is 3 axial fan now noise isn't that much of an issue, for me at least.
  • How many 8-pin connectors are needed? I think the Tiachi requires 3. Most others 2
  • Offers more then 1 bios switch?
  • RGB your thing? More subtle? Rainbow Puke?
  • Price, enough said.

And most importantly what's available. Get your F5 keys ready.

Next up, the 6900xt.

Asrock is 3 cables everyone else is 2 even water cooled cards.

well see tommorow but I suspect that amd is limiting all 6800xt bios to 350w to protect the 6900xt - amd has a history of trying to limit its second best card because usually with a higher power limit it can just about match its top card.

As to why then is asrock using 3 cables - marketing, it's nothing new - MSI for example is an expert at adding extra pcie cables that don't do anything

I had to raise a smile at this one. AMD has easily been hackable and using BIOS flashes for years, they are not as locked down as your making out.

notice I said amd has tried to do so, I know people have managed to get around it but they try anyway

They will need a ton of money for that and it will be easier with the PC only titles. The rest will have two sets anyway because they will sell most of their games on consoles and from the consoles to Big Navi it is a small step. It is true that anyone who wants to sell his game on PCs will have to optimize the game for Nvidia.
But we will see better performance on Big Navi RT, i told you that right now we see brute force RT. I don't expect them to beat Ampere but they will do much better than what we see right now.

By the time AMD fine tunes their ray tracing solution AND DLSS alternative into a workable product, Hopper and RDNA 3 will already be close to release. Ampere is only in the states it is now because of NVIDIA's gamble with Samsung 8nm. Once NVIDIA shifts back to TSMC 7nm, then the real fight begins.

Apparently, the RX 6000 series has locked bios'. I haven't been able to 100% confirm this yet but it seems to be the general consensus. I personally hope this is incorrect or if it isn't that some genius in his basement finds a way to unlock it.

Isn't it odd that we are now in a position where whoever you like and whatever you want, there is something for everyone (albeit at a higher price). And yet it is still the same few people going on with the petty bickering. It is always the same few on each side as well, the same AMD and Nvidia fanboys who have been at it for years. I'm amazed that they haven't been banned long ago but I guess they would just be replaced by someone else.

AMD's answer to DLSS will remove another crutch from Nvidias argument, and i imagine it will also be added to Xbox Series X. I think this is the generation of Console that we finally see AMD's investment into them really pay dividends, the Xbox Series X is so close to PC hardware now, and the technologies between desktop GPU and CPU are so closely matched featurewise to the latest Xbox and even Playstation to an extent. Watching that AMD Video from the AMD Dev regarding Ray Tracing etc, it was interesting to see how they map out their DX plans with RT. Any Microsoft first party console game being developed going forwards is going to be using this method, porting to PC will be easy for them, and if you got AMD hardware you will reap the performance benefits.

I still expect Nvidia to keep cramming their RTX rubbish into big titles though just because its what they do.
