The time has come

Oh, you want to judge me on innocently relaying an on-road experience on here? What? Because other people with no experience of said event think its unlikely?

Or do you want to judge me for selling a car with one key?

Or you want to judge me for preferring a car that has had a hard life but maintained properly over one that's had an easy life with sub-par maintenance?

Nope, I judge you on your terrible posting and the way you come across on here, and as I said, if you came across in the same way face to face, I'm sure you would get people calling you out.

I think what he's getting at is that you are supposed to view it, drive it and then put in an offer.

Anything else is timewasting.

Well not quite. I made an offer on my car and had it accepted before travelling to view the car and subsequently purchase it for the agreed price. The difference was I had already driven numerous other cars the same and knew without a shadow of a doubt that specific model was exactly what I wanted.

The difference here though is that Mike's never even driven an EK9, and will presumably tell the seller to do one tommorrow if he hates the one he's borrowing for a test drive.

Oddly though despite only apearing on his radar in the last 24 hours, he already knows for sure that the EK9 is infact the most amazing car ever, is totally cheap to run compared to everything else in his list and is properly focused.

I put in an offer on my SX before I flew to Ireland to look at it..

It might be easier to go view a bunch of cars before making an offer on a decent looking one if all you are buying is a Mondeo or 3 series, but for something that is relatively rare it is often not possible.

I hope you do like the ek9 mike, I really do. Man no offence intended but it's like you're suffereing from tunnel vision, no tunnel thinking...

Think I would have kept the ST tbh.

+ Some cheap snotter if you needed 2 cars.

Also, no offence to Tim but for what his car is/was supposed to be, it was hilariously slow.

No offence taken, but slow compared to what? It was quicker than your ST220, 0-60 and on a b-road run.

But I keep telling you, I know enough about the EK9 because it is so similar to the DC2 which I've done LOADS of research on.

I'm certain I will like the EK9, so why don't you wait and see if I'm right or not before criticising.

The Impreza and Evo are considerably faster. The RX8 is considerably newer. The Integra is more focused.

My opinion is that the Civic is a car that commands a price which rather over-eggs its ability. The Honda 'scene' is notorious for paying stupid money for old cars and this one is no different. It seems to have turned into some sort of hot hatch legend on relatively recently in the context of how long its been around.

Something like a Clio 182 is probably as good yet half the age, also. I think the EK9 was a good late 90's hatch, but then so was a 306 GTi-6 and thats a quarter of the price these days.

Thats purely my opinion, mind :)

I think you'll find the Civic is(subjectively) believed to be more focussed than the Integra. The Civic is (very slightly - according to fastestlaps) faster on track, too. Let's not forget the Civic is built on a much newer platform than the DC2 was. The research and development that went into the EK9 is quite amazing IMO, this car is so much more than a Civic with some trick suspension, owing to shell modifications, light weight parts, etc. as well.

Age wasn't much of a consideration when looking for a car, but that, image and RWDy0 is all it has over the DC2/EK9 but it costs significantly more to own in return.

Impreza/Evo were ruled out early.

The 182 Trophy is probably as good, but it is out of budget. I'm not sure a normal 182 would compare, plus I'm not hugely keen on them aesthetically, either.

Why are you so caught up on age, anyway? As someone with a car that isn't much newer, I wouldn't have thought it would be a huge issue for you?

The EK9 is probably more focused than the DC2 anyway. It feels a decent choice of car really, thats if it had been subject to some sort of selection. Its a car with all the gear from the factory, proper rear suspension, LSD, double wishbones upfront, screamer of an engine. They wont build hot hatches like that agaiin.

Mike dont get too carried away with the new platform bit. Its pretty much got longer rear lower arms and thats about it.

A car that's being changed next year precisely because it's beginning to age - I'm no hypocrit in that regard I can assure you.

Buying old cars is a pain. Buying newer cars that age as you own them is less irritating as its you and you alone thats in charge of its condition.

But the Civic is a car introduced in the mid 90's - in a lower end of the market. Sure the Type R was expensive but its base car wasnt and the quality of construction etc etc reflects that.

Type R hondas of that Era had body panels is certain areas made of much thicker steel, 1.6mm to 3mm, to drive the stiffness up aswell as extra bracing, stiffer wheel bearings etc. They are not MG Rover Halfords add ons.

Fair enough - though my point is still at the end of the day, on the way to Tesco, you are driving a 1998 Honda Civic.

Which cost you £5k.

May I draw your attention to something you yourself said?

My thoughts are that I really want an RX8, but I kind of think that a weekend car should be a bit faster

The Civic is slower. It is not as 'nice' a car. The RX8 handles beautifull and is RWD. It's a weekend car so fuel use doesnt matter.

Seriously, the RX8 is the right choice here.

Other cars in it's class.

Though I do think the sound definatley added to the comic value as it sounded fantastic, like a 1000bhp beast... but when it came to the go.. it didn't :D

And yeah it's probably a bit faster than my ST220 but in the right hands, who knows. I'm now a lot quicker through the bends than I was the first time we met :p

It isn't far off hot hatches of today in a straight line, so I'm not sure how you can say that.

The lowest 0-60 you'll read is 5.7 the highest 6.7, either way, what are most FWD hatches standard? Not much quicker than 6.5, is there?

Plus, the EK9 would probably rinse them as soon as you introduce corners (Things like R26.R etc. excluded).

Really? Remember this is a 90's car, back in the 90's 0-60 in 6.something from a hot hatch wasn't the norm.

True.

Was about to dig myself a hole and reel off a load of info about the EK9 gearing ratios and how it has a low top speed which is why hot hatches today would beat it quite easy at speeds from 60-100mph (been there before haven't we! ;))

...but I know better :p
