The µ43 thread - welcome to the really dark side

You can fit some nice Nikon and Canon and SIgma fast lenses with the metabones speedbooster and you get faster aperture as well. They become monsters to carry though.

For example a Canon 150-600 FF lens becomes an F4 105mm-420mm lens when mounted on a MFT camera (effective 210 - 840mm). There are some old Olympus fast telephoto lens which become F2 when mounted on the MFT using the metabones.

Thanks will have a look though the thought of carrying around a huge lense kind of puts me off.

The Panny 100-400 is an excellent lens and with a FF equivalent of 800mm is ideal for birds but is also versatile for other things.
An adapted lens could make sense if you also use another system like Canon or Nikon as well but to retain AF you'd have to use a decent adapter like a Metabones which adds to the cost.

Edit: missed Greebos post!

This is my only, other than phone, camera unfortunatley.

I wanted something to carry around for family shots but was versatile enough to do other things, maybe I'm asking too much and should get a slr just for nature photographs?

Thats the beauty of m4/3. I can stick a lens on mine and carry it in my pocket and then when shooting wildlife, get a long lense out which still weighs peanuts compared to equivalent SLR lens.,

What lense do you use for wildlife?

Matt

Just the F2.8 40-150 with the 1.4 converter so becomes f4 112-420 effective. I could do with more reach to be honest. Would love the f4 300 as I could use that with my teleconvertor to become f.56 840mm effective. I keep looking at the Pana 100-400 but its not cheap.

Waiting reviews of the new Panasonic 100-300 mark ii lens as its only £500 and is now weatherproof etc. The mark i was a bit soft past 200mm but hopefully the new one is supposed to be much improved.

Neither the Olympus 300 or Panasonic are cheap - but you get what you pay for I suppose - I think for what I want the 100-400 is better suited, though I still think it may be worthwhile at least trying the 100-300 mk2, but its £500 towards the 100-400 so is it false economy.

I plan to borrow a 100-300 before I buy first as you are right you are half way to a 100-400. I probably should just jump in as it's not as though my 40-150 with tele didn't cost £1200 so makes the 100-400 price seems fair. Plus I might end up selling that if the Panasonic 100-400 is as good as it claims

Got me camera. Batteries charging before I give it a whirl. Got one of the sales reps/photographers at work to sit down with me for a hour next week to teach me how its used. Happy chappy!

Any news on the micro four thirds front? Any tasty new lens' coming out soon.

Greebo what did you end up going for? I have a summer trip around France in a few months time with a 4 days stop off in the Pyrenees so was hoping to snap some wildlife, is are there any options for under £500? (300mm)

OMD em1 mark II. BTW just saw it was on offer at the photo show with a free vertical grip, £150 of list price and a Traveller leather messenger bag worth £300. Great deal.

We had a presentation on the Mk2 its a beautiful camera. The capture rate is incredible. Can't really mention much else though. I don't really know cameras all that well.

thinking of swapping out my oly 12-50, 14-42 and 40-150 lenses for an oly 14-150 f/4-5.6 ii

it's a little slower than my 12-50, but it'll give me an all-in-one weather sealed lens, and I'll still have a samyang 12mm for low-light / wide stuff.

Any thought on the 14-150 ii ?

Jealous. I keep almost adding it to my basket but I also want a ultra wide angle and was waiting for reviews of the new pana 8-18mm lense

I'd seen the info about that lens.

Hopefully the 100-400 will turn up early next week ready to use the following weekend, Just need a suitable case to carry it all around in now.
