The µ43 thread - welcome to the really dark side

The Panny Leica 100-400 is a good shout. The ideal Canon lens for safari was always said to be the 100-400L, this is obviously the m4/3 equivalent.
I've seen some sample shots and they were quite impressive.

There's a s/hand one for sale on the Olympus System User Group forum although someone appears to be currently interested in it.

I'd probably look at the new Panasonic 100-300mm II that is out in Feb-March if you've got a Panasonic body. Should be cheaper then the 100-400 but with the updated focussing and stabilisation should be a solid lens in good light.

If you've got money to burn then there the Oly 300 prime or the PL 100-400.

The old 100-300mm is a decent lens in good light - peak sharpness at f7.1 at the long end. Alas, the AF mech is showing its age now. Mine worked way better on my G7 body with DfD than it ever did on the GM5.

Hopefully, the MK2 with featured as much improved AF mech and support Dual IS.

The PL 100-400 has better detail and I've not seen the AF miss focus once, even when there was very little contrast in the scene.

Hmmm close to a grand second hand is quite a lot to buy for a one off trip/use (even if I am reselling :p)

Whats the 75-300mm II like? any experiences? Seems ideal.

I'm concious that a 100-400 might be TOO long as its m4/3 it would make it 200-800. I am wondering if 200 would be too much at the short end? Or is it like every day problems for most men where you want as much length as you can get?

You could just rent one for the trip?

Another consideration. I am looking into it :)

Anything over a week and it gets into silly money though. Even though I only need it for 4 days the trip is 12 days in total (heading to Zanzibar afterwards) so could be expensive! Hence thinking of buying then selling.

the 75-300 is good if you don't go to 300, stick to about 260ish, i call it value an good rather than a great lens, but for a really great trip like an African safari id bit the bullet and but the pro glass and resell if not needed after. this could be once in a lifetime opportunity deserves great glass

I'm after recommendations for a good telephoto lens for my Olympus EM5 mk 2, I've spoke to guys I know who all use SLR and when I mention the lenses for the mirrorless they all say you'll struggle with the light with those lenses was looking at the Panasonic 100-400.

So are there any other options out there for a lens with long reach either native lens or adapted lens that are worth considering?

Matt

Just saying Phate. Still owe me that beer ;) (Kidding no stress) just used my discount to get an E-PL7 with pancake lens for £250. My first camera :) Bought it as I'm going to Iceland and want to take some photos. Any guides or anything to understanding settings and other photography tips?

I don't know why they think we struggle for light, it's just a consideration.
What's your budget and what kind of photography will you be wanting to use it for?

When I'm in the UK it'll happen. I'm hardly there these days! :D

E-PL7 is a awesome little portable camera. When are you heading to Iceland. Whats your plans there?

All the tours, but generally just exploring and relaxing. Gonna do a months trip around Europe too.

I can get some 25% off Olympus shop codes if anyone wants one?

Sounds excellent. I'd get yourself a wide angle (the 9-18) you'll want it as wide as possible, especially in Iceland! In terms of tips. Get practising to expose for the sky :)

You can fit some nice Nikon and Canon and SIgma fast lenses with the metabones speedbooster and you get faster aperture as well. They become monsters to carry though.

For example a Canon 150-600 FF lens becomes an F4 105mm-420mm lens when mounted on a MFT camera (effective 210 - 840mm). There are some old Olympus fast telephoto lens which become F2 when mounted on the MFT using the metabones.

If the Panasonic is the only option then I'll get the Panasonic 100-400, just wondered what other options were available.

Main criteria is a walkabout lens, just take snaps of whatever I see, last weekend there was a tree creeper - got some distant shots but as soon as I tried to get near it was off.
